Windows 7 windows update broken after disk clone

After doing all the mentioned steps I'm no longer gettingI'm getting the 0xC8000247 error, but after a few seconds an 0x80080005 error occurs (not able to execute from server).

In the windows logs I read: "Can't initialize the catalogue database. ESENT-error: -107."

Any ideas?

OK, this is what I did to fix the problem. _silentium_inspired me to try to use the esent.dll from the hotfix.

This works for me to fix the errors from wuaueng.dll concerning edb.log with error -546 (EventId 412). Event source ESENT:

1. Install the KB982018 hotfix on another working machine with the same architecture (in my case x64). This provides the updated esent.dll.

2 On the computer with the fix installed, check the version number ofWindows\Sytem32\esent.dll and Windows\SysWOW64\esent.dll. It was 6.1.7600.16592 in my case.

3. On the computer with no fix installed, check the version number ofWindows\Sytem32\esent.dll and Windows\SysWOW64\esent.dll. It was 6.1.7600.16385 in my case.
4. On the broken computer takeover the ownership of Windows\Sytem32\esent.dll andWindows\SysWOW64\esent.dll.
5. Then change the access rights of the two files so you can rename it (e.g. Users all rights).
6. Rename both files to esent.dll.001
7. Copy the Windows\System32\ esent.dll fromthe computer with the applied update to the computer where the update cannot be applied. Both files must be replaced:Windows\Sytem32\esent.dll and Windows\SysWOW64\esent.dll.
8. Reboot.
9. Install the KB982018 hotfix. This should be possible now. Hurray!
10. Reboot.

Windows Update repaired!

You do not need to install it on another box. Taking somthing out of MSU is fairly easy:

mkdir someDir

expand Windows6.1-KB982018-x64.msu -F:* someDir

mkdir someDir\content

expand someDir\Windows6.1-KB982018-x64.cab -F:* someDir\content

dir esent.dll /s

et voilà...

Sony and Intel were certainly of no help.  But HP was.  Thanks!

That's what solved my problem with W7HP64@Lenovo T61p. Thumbs up for HP!

The mysterious thing is that when I went to Intel site trying to download newest drivers there was no newer version. After applying HP driver besides solved problem I got also performance boost - the system boots visibly quicker.

How is it that HP is quicker with the driver than Intel itself?

My Window is 32 bit.  So, I only need to copy 1 esent.dll file from the old HDD to replace to new HDD?

 

The version # of the esent.dll is 6.1.7600.16952  But I still can't install the Hotfix again in the new HDD.  Error Code = 0xc8000247

 

 

You need to take Ownership of the esent.dll that you are replacing, change Permissions so that you have Full Control of it ( please write down all of the Permissions for the file so that when you replace it, you can set the Perms exactly as they were ), rename or delete it, then take Ownership of esent.dll on the old HDD, change Permissions so that you have Full Control, replace the renamed/deleted esent.dll on the new HD, revert Ownership and Permissions back to TrustedInstaller, and then restart the system.

I saw the latest WindowsUpdate.log that you posted and it's still experiencing the database failure, so I'm assuming that esent.dll was not replaced correctly on the new HD.

At this point in time, since you've uninstalled SP1 from the external HD and it is a viable, restorable backup of Win 7, suggest that you try to install the HP update that Tom6455 used on his Sony laptop to resolve this issue   Error Messages Appear During Windows Update, When Inserting Card or Using Live Mail

That method is a great deal less time consuming and it's easier than replacing system files.
