This is the craziest issue.  I had an install of a trivial program cause a Blue Screen of Death, but had luckily imaged my hard drive earlier that day with Macrium Reflect V6 (every week to one of 2 different USB drives so I never lose more than a weeks worth), and everything worked fine except the dreaded Images in Outlook disappeared.

So, I was going reinstall IE 10 since we all know Images in Outlook are rendered by IE (DUMB).  But, I was getting errors messages.  I tried installing IE 11, and the same messages.  I then tried Windows Update, and it said the Service wasn't running.  Tried cycling the Service, but it always said it was running.

I then found a thread that said something about the HD having the 4096 blocks instead of the old school 512 blocks.  So, I tried the recommendation of the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver directly from Intel.  Their Identification application couldn't validate my system having the correct Chipset, and I manually tried all of their Drivers for the past 2 years, and everyone of them failed.

I tried Seagate since I installed their Momentus XT 1TB drive about 2 years ago, and again their Utility failed to find the drive and provide a fix did not correct the Windows Update.

I tried the Lenovo site for Hardware specific updates to my OLD, but RELIABLE Thinkpad T60P.  Still does a great job for being 10 years old!

I tried the Microsoft Auto FIX, and many of the links under this thread, but all failed.

Getting frustrated after 2 days of working (1 Day part time, and today ALL DAY), I decided to try the HP link to the Intel RST Driver, but was nervous since some of these updates are hardware specific, and might be screwing up other things (but again, I had a fresh Macrium Reflect image of the HD from last night).

I cloned to a Samsung SSD 850 EVO using their included data migration program and I get an error message

Windows 10 couldn't be installed

we couldn't update the system reserved partition

The error message is 80240016 and I have tried the fix from Microsoft without success.

Tom6455 - I've spent half a day messing with this problem.  I even tried updating the Intel Matrix Storage Manager through Dell.  It wasn't until I installed the IRST driver I downloaded from your HP link that Windows Update started working again.  I could kiss you (with tongue).

My problem was the "windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. you may need to restart your computer." and "installer encountered an error: 0xc8000247" (whenever I tried to run the *.msu updates)

I tried renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder, I tried running old antivirus removal tools (any, I didn't care), I ran tweaking.com's Repair Windows Updates and tweaking.com's Windows Repair, I ran Mr. Fixit, I tried manually re-registering the Windows Update dlls, I tried a Clean Boot and that's only half of the wrenching I did.

I don't know if I want to cry with joy or punch someone in the mouth (my problem).

You can make the mistake of not cloning all that is needed.

Does Windows Update now work?
