Original Title: My wireless Optical mouse 2000 Scroll wheel works intermittently

I recently purchased a wireless desktop set that has a wireless optical mouse 2000, Wireless Keyboard 100 and a wireless desktop receiver 3.1 in the kit. After installing the drivers and Intellitype/point software the mouse wheel doesn't work all the time, for instance after clicking my way into an eighty plus page PDF manual or long webpage the wheel seems to not work in one direction, then the other direction won't work. I've tried new batteries, latest driver package from microsoft site (intellipoint 8.01) moving closer to the receiver or farther away to the point of "low mouse signal". Today however the mouse is 2-3 feet away from the receiver and it keeps popping up saying "the mouse sigal is low would you like to start the troubleshooter?" Yes i have tried this and tried switching the usb connection to no avail. Can Anyone HELP please.... Tired of Click and Drag

The same problem here, but I have found a way to make it work (actually there are two ways LOL)

-   Remove one of the batteries.  Believe it or not, the scroll wheel works perfectly when I remove one of the battery (doesn't matter which one).  However, I don't know how long it will last since there is only one battery in operational.

OR

-  Remove the batter cover and take out the batteries.  Use a screw driver to loose the screw about 2 turns (for some reason I believe it was screwed in too tight).  Put the batteries back and you are or set.

I can not guarantee that my methods will always work, but the fact is it's working for me ever since.

    Removing the battery and unscrewing it 2 turns worked me , thank you

    Stupendous! It works! A half screw and Wala! the scroll wheel works fine. I had just gone to Microcenter, scoured their clearance bin, and blew a whopping 8 bucks on a new used microsoft mouse. After spending an unsuccessful hour trying to get that to work (even called up tech support in India), I finally look to see about fixing my old mouse. Way to go!

    I bought this Wireless Optical Mouse 2000 to replace the Wireless Optical Mouse 2.0a in my keyboard/mouse set which has been great for many years but is finally giving up the ghost.

    The wheel on the new mouse was really irritating me, both with the ratchet "click" as the wheel turned, and with the wheel only scrolling intermittently.

    As I said above, loosening the screw solved the intermittent scroll, but the ratchet was still annoying me because the old mouse didn't have this.

    Since it was an Amazon Warehouse deal and cost all of £4.50, I threw caution to the wind and undid the screw completely, took the mouse apart and had a close look at the wheel mechanism.

    The wheel has a "star wheel" on the side of it which is the actual scrolling mechanism, but completely independent of this there are bumps on the inside of the wheel and a peg on the wheel mount which clicks on these bumps to give the ratchet feel.

    After some careful experimenting and testing I decided that this mechanism has no effect on the scrolling whatsoever, so I unclipped the wheel, bent the peg backwards and clipped the wheel back in.

    Result! The wheel now scrolls smoothly, with no clicking whatsoever, and no intermittent jumps, and has given my keyboard/mouse set a new lease of life.
