Windows 7 Service Pack 1: 99% then Failure Configuring Service Pack, reverting changes error

A few days ago i noticed an update for Windows 7 Service Pack 1. I tried to install it today, it worked fine right up to the moment it asks to reboot the computer. Then after rebooting it starts up as normal update procedure however as it gets to 99% on Configuring Service Pack, it fails and I am left stuck at "Failure Configuring Service Pack, reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" for over 10 minutes then shuts down. Then on Bootup i notice nothing has changed and the same thing repeats. Please Help

Ok guys after weeks of not replying back after i forgot bout this question, i have managed to get it working, but that was a few months after my laptop broke in which i had to reset to factory settings, which reset all the system updates done to the laptop, then when i tried installing IE 9 and Windows 7 service pack 1 they both succeeded without issues. Guess the whole problem the entire time was a faulty update

    Hi thefowles1,

     

    Based on your logs, it appears that either a registry key or a file does not have the correct set of permissions thereby causing the operation to fail. There isn't a straightforward solution but I recommend you try these before attempting SP Install:

    1. Ensure Software Protection Service is running and not disabled.
    2. Stop or Uninstall any AntiVirus programs during the course of SP install.
    3. Download and run the System Update Readiness Tool from this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821 The tool attempts to fix any pre-existing corruptions on the system that may be interfering with SP Install.

    I am in the same hole as the others here (SP1, I think, and it froze at 8%).    This all happened as Windows Update pinged me that it wanted to offer me an update.   I didn't even realize it was loading a service pack, let alone realize there was background work I should be doing before it does its thing.

    I'd think if Windows Update doesn't have a clear path to success, then it should be informing me what I need to do for it.   AND it should be degrading gracefully.

    Haven't yet figured out how I am going to get myself out of this mess -- I will keep reading posts here -- but my long term attitude toward MS has shifted because of this experience.

    Windows Update installed service pack one.  Rebooted, and I am stuck at 8%.

    Here is what I would like to know:

    How do I get the system to revert back to where it was prior to this Windows Update?

    As I can't get into Window7, I need to do this from the "DOS PROMPT" interface.

    What is my commend line to achieve this?  Or what files do I need to delete?

    Did Windows Update create a restore point as part of its process?  If so, is there a DOS PROMPT command I can invoke to get back to that restore point?

    I solved my own problem (just above).   When I rebooted into Safe Mode, the system undid its partial installation.  I was then able to reboot in normal mode and be back where I started.  I can now step through the readiness tools before letting Windows Update install SP1.

    Watch out, those readiness tools did me no good the last 3 times I've tried this...only sign of trouble is when I can't reboot after install. I'm not ready to try again yet with posts like this still showing up.
