Windows 7 Service Pack 1: 99% then Failure Configuring Service Pack, reverting changes error

A few days ago i noticed an update for Windows 7 Service Pack 1. I tried to install it today, it worked fine right up to the moment it asks to reboot the computer. Then after rebooting it starts up as normal update procedure however as it gets to 99% on Configuring Service Pack, it fails and I am left stuck at "Failure Configuring Service Pack, reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" for over 10 minutes then shuts down. Then on Bootup i notice nothing has changed and the same thing repeats. Please Help

Ok guys after weeks of not replying back after i forgot bout this question, i have managed to get it working, but that was a few months after my laptop broke in which i had to reset to factory settings, which reset all the system updates done to the laptop, then when i tried installing IE 9 and Windows 7 service pack 1 they both succeeded without issues. Guess the whole problem the entire time was a faulty update

    Can you be more specific as to what you mean by "ran version 14 of the Windows Hotfix"?

    I found a solution but I do not know if it will work for everyone. I am now running SP1 after a succesful installation last night. 

    I kept reading about how it could somehow be related to a graphics driver, SO.. I went into Windows updater and one at a time, installed the windows updates that were there without installing SP1.  There was an update for my nvidia 7300 LE Graphics card, but that update would not install either. So what i did was go directly to the nvidia website and located the correct latest driver for my machine and downloaded it and installed it.

    Then I went into Windows update and disabled the nvidia update. I restarted the computer and ran version 14 of the Windows Hotfix.

    Then I restarted the machine again.

    Then I tempted fate one last time and went into windows update and attempted to install the SP1 again after I made sure that all other smaller updates were taken care of.

    I wake up in the morning expecting to see the same failure message but WALLA.. SP1 is now installed and I have the green check mark saying I am up to date.

    I hope this information helps someone else figure out this horror show of a problem faster than I did.

    thanks everyone for reiterating the continuing failure of microsoft to handle this problem. I too am having this problem and with a subscription to this thread, am sort of sitting back waiting and hoping that someone(microsoft) will come up with a solution other than reinstalling.

    I am running windows 7 on a macbook pro 2gbRam 2.2ghz intel core 2 duo and have booted it in vmware fusion on os x. I have about 5gb space left on the 30gb partition I had set aside. All updates except the service pack have worked.

    I cannot believe this is still a problem.. i have run every fix and tool and download i possibly have done and every time i have the windows configure service pack go to 99% and revert changes killing about 45 minutes each time. I fail to believe that i need to go into the CBS.log and fix the dozen or so DLL errors it found when YOU CANT EVEN GET THE DLL FILES FROM MICROSOFT!!!! The only way it would seem to fix this is to REINSTALL windows or choose the upgrade option of the DVD effectively wiping your hard drive. 

    Well i have 9500 songs in my itunes along with 35 movies. i will be backing them up to a new 2 TB hard drive but do i really have to reinstall windows to fix this? Really?

    Someone needs to solve this issue as it seems i am far from alone.
