A few days ago i noticed an update for Windows 7 Service Pack 1. I tried to install it today, it worked fine right up to the moment it asks to reboot the computer. Then after rebooting it starts up as normal update procedure however as it gets to 99% on Configuring Service Pack, it fails and I am left stuck at "Failure Configuring Service Pack, reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" for over 10 minutes then shuts down. Then on Bootup i notice nothing has changed and the same thing repeats. Please Help

Ok guys after weeks of not replying back after i forgot bout this question, i have managed to get it working, but that was a few months after my laptop broke in which i had to reset to factory settings, which reset all the system updates done to the laptop, then when i tried installing IE 9 and Windows 7 service pack 1 they both succeeded without issues. Guess the whole problem the entire time was a faulty update
I did it all: Troubleshooter, SFC, System Readiness Tool, no problems reported. And still SP1 refuses to install on my x64 system. After 10% it stops, reverts and gives the 0x80070490 error. I had no problem updating two x32 systems. Actually, I never had problems with any windows update ever. But this one simply does not work. I tried the procedure now three times and I quit untill there is a solution.
Don't take this lightly: I have a very generic configuration. So if I have this problem thousands of other users will have it as well.
With two of my computers one a 64bit one a 32 bit both home preimium. It takes an hour to get to 14% reboots then after the reboot its back to 7%. It repeats this cycle for about 4 hours before it finally fails and reverts the changes. The only system it was successful on was my 32 bit Ultmiate system That is self built. It seems microsoft has really screwed something up in this service pack. I have never had any issues installing a service pack until now. This is getting ridiculous

Been banging my head against a wall for two days over this install of SP1.
Just found an answer that worked for me.
Give Full Permission to All Users/Desktop:
- Go to Start Search, type in CMD.
Right click on CMD and Open as Administrator
- Type each command below, pressing enter after each command. When asked to confirm press Y and hit enter:
cacls "C:\Users\Public\Public Desktop" /t /g everyone:f
cacls "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" /t /g everyone:f
- Exit the CMD.
This attempt did not resolve the situation for me.
