A few days ago i noticed an update for Windows 7 Service Pack 1. I tried to install it today, it worked fine right up to the moment it asks to reboot the computer. Then after rebooting it starts up as normal update procedure however as it gets to 99% on Configuring Service Pack, it fails and I am left stuck at "Failure Configuring Service Pack, reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" for over 10 minutes then shuts down. Then on Bootup i notice nothing has changed and the same thing repeats. Please Help

Ok guys after weeks of not replying back after i forgot bout this question, i have managed to get it working, but that was a few months after my laptop broke in which i had to reset to factory settings, which reset all the system updates done to the laptop, then when i tried installing IE 9 and Windows 7 service pack 1 they both succeeded without issues. Guess the whole problem the entire time was a faulty update
Well, I'm not getting the crashes any more, however the AMD video update has caused it's own problems. Ever since the update AMD Catalyst Control Center host application is crashing. I don't know if it's related, but Windows Media Center, something I consider a primary application has also stopped working. Both apps come pop up a Window that says the app has crashed and Windows is looking for a solution, then the popup goes away without doing anything. Kind of useless noise without any effect. I googled the Catalyst Control Center problem and it looks like AMD (ATI) and Microsoft are pointing at one another on who's fault it is. Needless to say, I don't care I just want my Win7 Ultimate 64-bit computer to work.
These Windows updates are killing me. I just get my computers working and stable then a new batch of updates comes out and problems start all over.
I ran into the same problem with Windows 7nSP 1. My PC does not even boot from cdrom. When starting ın safe mode it agaın returns to the "Stage 4 of 4 - Failure configuring service pack - reverting changes" . İt stays like this for hours. Even after power cycle - ın safe mode - it returns to the same window " bla bla reverting changes" I can not even enter BIOS to change bootorder to boot from cdrom.
Please help !
Spent two hours on the phone with MS Support. They took control of my computer and ran a crash debugger called "WhoCrashed" a free tool from http:// www.resplendence.com/. The tool showed that my video driver was causing a conflict.within the kernel. MS Support patiently installed a new AMD video driver for my HD4650 video card. They also tried but failed to fix some issues that came up with two gadgets I like that have not worked since this update mess started. They say the video driver should fix the problem. If it didn't and I get another crash I'll check back and update this forum topic. They also said that a lot of the problems people are having with updates are due to outdated drivers.
I'm running 64-bit Win7 on a Gateway LX6200 with Quad core AMD and 8GB of memory.
I managed to get SP1 to install on April 29 following the advise at Tom's Hardware . Following that was a SP1 64 bit security update on May 3 which resulted in a BSOD during boot that Win7 managed to repair.
On May 11 I had another BSOD on boot. I called MS Support on May 13 for the problems I'm having with Windows Update on this computer and another 32-bit Win7 computer all of a sudden. We found that Windows Update shouldn't be recommending a .Net 3.51 update since I was running .Net 4.0 so I hid the update and hoped the problems was fixed. Wrong.
Yesterday, May 21, I had another BSOD on boot which could not be automatically repaired so I called Microsoft using the same case number. Microsoft had me do the F8 key when the Gateway screen appeared during boot and choose "Last Known Good Configuration (advanced)". In the follow-up Microsoft email the cause was given as Corrupt registry. Again I had high hopes of the problem being fixed. Wrong again, I had a BSOD again this morning, May 22, during boot and had to do the F8 thing again. So looks like I'll be calling Microsoft support again this morning.
I have dmp files for each of the dates given above.
