A few days ago i noticed an update for Windows 7 Service Pack 1. I tried to install it today, it worked fine right up to the moment it asks to reboot the computer. Then after rebooting it starts up as normal update procedure however as it gets to 99% on Configuring Service Pack, it fails and I am left stuck at "Failure Configuring Service Pack, reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" for over 10 minutes then shuts down. Then on Bootup i notice nothing has changed and the same thing repeats. Please Help

Ok guys after weeks of not replying back after i forgot bout this question, i have managed to get it working, but that was a few months after my laptop broke in which i had to reset to factory settings, which reset all the system updates done to the laptop, then when i tried installing IE 9 and Windows 7 service pack 1 they both succeeded without issues. Guess the whole problem the entire time was a faulty update
I did it all: Troubleshooter, SFC, System Readiness Tool, no problems reported. And still SP1 refuses to install on my x64 system. After 10% it stops, reverts and gives the 0x80070490 error. I had no problem updating two x32 systems. Actually, I never had problems with any windows update ever. But this one simply does not work. I tried the procedure now three times and I quit untill there is a solution.
Don't take this lightly: I have a very generic configuration. So if I have this problem thousands of other users will have it as well.

Just found an answer that worked for me.
Give Full Permission to All Users/Desktop:
- Go to Start Search, type in CMD.
Right click on CMD and Open as Administrator
- Type each command below, pressing enter after each command. When asked to confirm press Y and hit enter:
cacls "C:\Users\Public\Public Desktop" /t /g everyone:f
cacls "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" /t /g everyone:f
- Exit the CMD.
This attempt did not resolve the situation for me.

I have the same problem installing SP1. At first it would halt at 8% but now I get a code 8024200d.
I have tried:
- installed the readiness tool (several times)
- deleted cookies, temporary files (etc)
- tried installing from the full package and windows update
- disabled my av
- renamed the softwaredistribution folder and let windows create a new one
I did get sp1 onto my other machine after installing the readiness tool but this machine doesn't want to know.
The only thing, so far.I haven't tried is installing in safe mode - Would this work? Has anyone got any suggestions please that I could tyr?

I've tried running in safe mode and using msconfig and in both the update failed as before.
