I used to sit around playing Spider Solitaire on my XP machine. Well I got a new Windows 7 machine and the new version of Spider Solitaire sucks - to put it mildly. Is there any way to get back to the old XP version that was fun to play?

I just managed to get XP version of Solitaire to play on a Windows 7 machine.
In a separate folder, just put cards.dll file and sol.exe and you are good to go!
The Windows7 version of Solitaire is so fuzzy that it is unusable and gives you a headache.

While most users are enjoying the Windows 7 experience and all the new features and abilities it has there are some that prefer the look of the games from Windows XP. While the functionality and game play has not changed the look has.For those of you that prefer the style of the XP versions of the Windows games on your Windows 7 PC, here are instructions to help you getting the XP versions up and running.
**You need to have a valid copy of Windows XP**
In Windows XP, use Windows explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\System32.**Note that the Windows folder and System 32 folder will hide the contents of the folder by default.This is because there are system files in these locations and you should take care when navigating in these folders.** Copy the following files to a USB memory stick, or CD (whatever means you have to move files):
cards.dll
freecell.exe
mshearts.exe
sol.exe
spider.chm
spider.exe
spider.hlp
winmine.exe
Then on your Windows 7 PC, create a folder (do not put it in the Windows\system32 folder) and paste those files into the folder. Now you can either open the folder and launch games from there, or create shortcuts to the games and place them on your desktop.
For the Pinball game, it has its own folder located at C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Pinball.You can copy the entire Pinball folder and then move it to your Windows 7 PC.**Do not put it in the C:\Program Files\Windows NT folder.**You should put it in the same folder with the card games (if you moved some of those).

HI, thanks for your reply. I wasn't looking for backgammon ON XP - I have been playing it on XP for some years. I followed the directions to copy over the spider solitaire from XP (in other words I found the CARD.DLL to copy over). However, I cannot find the equivalent "link" or whatever its called to copy over the internet backgammon from XP. As you said because its called internet backgammon, maybe it cannot be copied over. I won't bother the community any more. Thank you for your suggestions. Ellen.
Sorry, I just wanted you to know I searched XP and all I could find was the internet backgammon, not a file like freecell or the others. Not sure if you are using Win7, Vista or Win8. The internet backgammon is on my Win7.
As far as I can tell, you are correct in that the internet backgammon can't be copied over from XP. Maybe they included that and the other internet games to other versions of Windows. I just have Win 7 & XP.
It never hurts to ask questions on the Community Forum. Remember the instructions came from 2011!!
You never know what information you'll find. I've found a lot of helpful info.

Yes I've looked at internet backgammon on the Windows 8.1 and it's not what I want. Firstly , cant' get a full page of the board, get lots of adds and other stuff all around it. A lot of the games shown want money.
As someone else said.... why did microsoft stuff around with such a popular series of games???? I would have paid extra to keep those games when I was FORCED to move to Windows.8.
I guess we'll all get over it in time :)

The internet backgammon on Win7 is copyright 2009, so I'm sure it's different than XP. I have XP shut down right now and can't check, but I'm sure you know. I've never played any games online so not familiar with the size, ads etc.
I don't know the reason MS changed the games even ones that are not online. I know when IE9 was in the beta, most of the suggestions for what should be included or left out did not come from users, until AFTER decisions were made. It seems Users input isn't wanted or needed.
Let's hope they read these boards or maybe some of the MVP's here will let them know!
I hope it's not too late to give some input for Windows 9. I had read somewhere that it is to be out within a year.
