Blue Screen error: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

original title: Another sad story of the dreaded BSOD... error: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL ... Please advise as to best approach to remedy problem~

I guess it would be almost two weeks ago now that my wifes laptop first had the error (tech info line is as follows):

iaStor.sys - Address FFFFF8800110BF2B base at FFFFF880010C1000, DateStamp 4a287aa4.

The Laptop is a year old and has had no problems previously. I dont know all the specs but its an ASUS with an Intel Centrino and running Windows 7 OS.

Here's what I have done so far:

  1. I tried to boot system in all SAFE modes ... no joy... same error~
  2. I booted system with recovery CD and tried to to perform a restore from previous resore points (tried 3 previous dates so far) ... no joy ... same error~
  3. (after reading previous posts of others with simular problems) I booted system with recovery/driver cd and renamed existing iaStor.sys to iaStor1.sys and, then copied iaStor.sys file from recovery/driver cd ... no joy... same error~
  4. Submitting to my level of ignorance, I told my wife to take it Best Buy and have the Geek Squad Fix it... Knowing that she had purchased the extended warranty(costing $220), I thought it would certainly be covered! She reports them saying its not a harware problem, its a driver problem and it will cost $140 for them to fix it! She went on to tell me if we didnt have the warranty, the Geeks would chage $240, so we should feel better about that! lmao!!! we cant afford either ammount!  Well the Geek in question may well be very computer savy but he is and idiot in securing company software as he left his diagnostic disk in my laptop. Lucky for him, I am an honest man and I wont go and sell Geek Squad software on the black market!

*** Not wanting to loose any personal files existing, I have not completely reinstalled Windows 7... and I am really wanting to avoid that process (mostly, because figuring out how to copy everything without spending $$$ on an external is still baffling me!)  I hope that you'all can walk me through the fix on this because I cant afford any other process to getting our laptop back on-line~

Thx in advance for your help,

Ra

    Hi,

You can use Safe Mode as needed to troubleshoot - repeatedly tap F8 as you boot.

Check with ASUStek for updated Chipset drivers (get any BIOS updates while there). Then check

Intel Downloads for the chipset drivers.

iastor.sys = Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver - See your System maker (motherboard maker for

custom built systems) and the chipset maker. This driver could have been driven to fault by other

    programs such as Symantec/Norton.

We can analyze the minidumps if you make them available from the SkyDrive or other file

sharing sites (such as MediaFire). If you have problems uploading the minidumps copy

them to the Desktop or the Documents folder and upload them from there.

Zip or upload the contents of C:\Windows\minidump

Use SkyDrive to upload collected files and post screen shot/picture.

Think Video drivers mainly though it can be others. See the driver section in my generic bluescreen

troubleshooting methods below. BIOS, low level chipset drivers and antivirus/antispyway/security

programs can also cause this. Check the troubleshooter and when you get to the driver and memory testing sections refer to the generic methods in next message and then return to the troubleshooter

    if needed.

    Cause

A driver tried to access an address that is pageable (or that is completely invalid) while the IRQL was too high.

This bug check is usually caused by drivers that have used improper addresses.

If the first parameter has the same value as the fourth parameter, and the third parameter indicates an execute operation, this bug check was likely caused by a driver that was trying to execute code when the code itself was paged out. Possible causes for the page fault include the following:

    • The function was marked as pageable and was running at an elevated IRQL (which includes obtaining a lock).
    • The function call was made to a function in another driver, and that driver was unloaded.
    • The function was called by using a function pointer that was an invalid pointer.

Here are some methods to possibly fix the blue screen issue. If you could give the Blue Screen

info that would help. Such as the BCC and the other 4 entries on the lower left. And any other

    Hi,

References to Vista also apply to Windows 7.

This is my generic how to for proper driver updates :

This utility makes it easy to see which versions are loaded :

DriverView - Free - utility displays the list of all device drivers currently loaded on your system.

For each driver in the list, additional useful information is displayed: load address of the driver,

description, version, product name, company that created the driver, and more.

    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/driverview.html

For Drivers check System Maker as fallbacks and Device Maker's which are the most current.

Control Panel - Device Manager - Display Adapter - write down the make and complete model

of your video adapter - double click - Driver's tab - write down the version info. Now click UPdate

Driver (this may not do anything as MS is far behind certifying drivers) - then Right Click -

Uninstall - REBOOT this will refresh the driver stack.

Repeat that for Network - Network Card (NIC), Wifi, Sound, Mouse and Keyboard if 3rd party

with their own software and drivers and any other major device drivers you have.

Now go to System Maker's site (Dell, HP, Toshiba as examples) (as rollback) and then Device

Maker's site (Realtek, Intel, Nvidia, ATI as examples) and get their latest versions. (Look for

BIOS, Chipset and software updates at System Maker's site while there.)

Download - SAVE - go to where you put them - Right Click - RUN AD ADMIN - REBOOT after

    each installation.

Always check in Device Manager - Drivers tab to be sure the version you are installing actually

shows up. This is because some drivers rollback before the latest is installed (sound drivers

particularly do this) so install a driver - reboot - check to be sure it is installed and repeat as

    needed.

Repeat at Device Makers - BTW at Device Makers DO NOT RUN THEIR SCANNER - check

    manually by model.

Manually look at manufacturer's sites for drivers - and Device Maker's sites.

    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/driverssupport/ht/driverdlmfgr.htm

If you update drivers manually then it is a good idea to disable Driver Installations in Windows

Updates, this leaves Windows Updates ON however it will not install drivers which will usually

be older and cause issues. If Updates suggests a new driver then HIDE it (Right Click on it)

and then go look for new ones manually if you wish.

Memory tests do not catch all errors such as mismatched memory (possible even for sticks

that appear to be identical) and when faster memory is placed in system behind slower memory.

    hey Rob

wow... lots-0-info!  I feel overwhelmed! ok... a new day and Im ready to dive in again and try to resolve this! Im starting over for clarity... prolly more for me than you! :-) Also. please bare with me as I have some dificulty in processing information these days and, tend to miss the obvious sometimes.

The problem Im having is with the wifes laptop (which is running Windows 7) and I am communicating to you via my desktop (which is running Vista). I presently have no means of interconnecting the two computers so I am challenged with extracting more indepth information to repair the laptop.

Heres what I have: ASUS U50A laptop 4G/500.  2 ea. CDs from ASUS: Windows 7 Recovery Media and Driver & Utility Ver 1.0 U50A. There have been no changes/new installs as of late and the only thing I can think could be a cause is that windows is set to auto update but, I really dont know.

    =======================

turn on the laptop... it processes and shows the windows startup screen... then shows the windows welcome screen... then it gets the blue screen with the following error:

    DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

    *** STOP:  0x000000D1 (0xFFFFF9800274FC60, 0x0000000000000002, 0x0000000000000001, 0xFFFFF880012C04FF)

    *** iaStor.sys  -  Address FFFFF880012C04FF base at FFFFF8800126E000, DateStamp 4a287aa4

    =======================

turn off and turn on again... pressing F8, get the Advanced Boot Options menu... select "Repair Your Computer"... get System Recovery Options window prompt thru to Choose a recovery tool... select Startup Repair...it starts searching for problems... then posts Startup Repair could not detect a problem. go back to System Recovery Options window and select Sytem Restore... shows most recent resore point as 2/17/2011 (thats interesting because system would not work 2 days ago... it hasnt worked for a few weeks now)... click on show more restore points. it shows a 2/2/2011 windows update and, prior to that is a 1/17/2011 Installed Network64. Prior to that are almost daily postings of windows updates.

Im now wondering if this Network64 is what caused all this?

utilizing my desktop... I have located the update in question and downloaded it. expanded the zip and copied it onto a cd. I think I know the answer but Ill ask to be sure...
