The Windows start button is not working. When I press it nothing happens. SO I cannot shut down the computer in the normal manner or access any programs other than ones with desktop icons.

Hi,

I faced a similar issue! The following worked for me

  1. Right click on the Start Button and select "Run"
  2. Type "regedit"
  3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Explorer>Advance
  4. Create a new DWORD (32-bit) value, call it "EnableXamlStartMenu"
  5. Restart Explorer from task manager.

Hope this helps!

Hi nickthomp.

Does start menu open if you press the windows key on the keyboard?.

Can you right click the start menu orb and choose properties, if so

In the Customize Start Menu dialog box, click Use Default Settings, clickOK, and then clickOK again.

Also try.

1 .   Press Ctrl + Alt+ delete on the keyboard and click on task manager.

2 .   Click on the Process tab and locate explorer.exe in the windows and click on end task.

3 .   Click on File and then click on New.

4.   Type explorer.exe and press enter.

Hope his helps.

I have the same issue.  I added the DWORD as per above. I had the start menu for a while, but returned to same symptoms on reboot.  So frustrating.

I have tried this trick, and even did a restart straight after, but still no start button or Cortana response. Edge too has vanished, really infuriating and so much time wasted on it! STILL no solution from Microsoft either-do they read these posts?? They have reputedly known of this glitsch since January! PLEASE get on the case M'soft!!! WHY ruin a wonderful new system with silly things like this?? Happened after my last update 15/8. Dont want to have to revert to 7 and reload again!!

this is what happened to me. I had windows 8.1. I was going to revert back to 8 & when I tried, the message I got was the 8 had disappeared, and no longer existed on my laptop. This is the worst upgrade I have ever had to deal with. I have no explorer.exe either. Lost some of my other programs, like the Calendar. Missing icons off the taskbar. Computer has slowed way down. left-click & right-click do not always respond now.

Boo - for putting this out before this stuff happened. Why don't you experiment on your personal PCs and laptops first?
