I have the same problem for quite some time with a Lenovo G550, Windows 7 Ultimate and MS Security Essentials. (no non-MS software installed) I try to backup data and system image (about 50 GB) on a 250GB Freecom USB disk.
I tried everything and finished to re-install Windows 7 Ultimate with SP1 MS Security Essentials and Office 2010. I did also increase the size of the hidden system disk from 100 MB to 600 MB as this has been suggested as a remedy. The I tried again.
Data backup never made a problem (and system image works on the local harddisk as well) but as soon as I choose the Windows backup default with system image on the external USB disk (which may be slow, as it is not acceptable for system speed up) it returns
