Ok Now I have tried to install from windows update and manually trying to install this update KB2468871

It is not working and it keeps giving me an error

Error code 643.

Finally after weeks of frustration I was able to fix this mess, none of the advice microsoft provided worked, uninstalling reinstalling, using microsoft .net removal tool, microsoft fixit, disabling UAC, and numerous other things which did nothing at all.

The source of this problem with KB2468871 is that a .dll needed for it to install is not present for whatever reason, copying and inserting the .dll where it needs to be will allow you to install this update.

Download the KB2468871 update here:

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=3556

Try to install it, so that it extracts the needed .dll

C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\assembly\GAC_MSIL\System.Xml.Serialization\v4.0_4.0.0.0__b77a5c561934e089

Go to there and you should see the .dll file "System.Xml.Serialization.dll" If you can't find it do a search for it.

Copy it.

Paste it here C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319

And paste it here:

C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319

Install the KB2468871 update you downloaded earlier.

    LOL@microsoft,

    Thank you i have been trying all other solutions like re install .net 4 and using the cleanup tool but none worked until i came across your solution. I just wanted to thank you.

    in my case attempting to install kb2468871 created the file in the folder I listed, if it didn't you may have to get a second computer and install it on there for the file to be present.  Then find the file on the computer and copy it to a usb flash drive and put in the necessary folders on the computer you are having issues with.

    I could find "System.Xml.dll" in that directory, but nothing name "System.Xml.Serialization.dll".

    the file date was 10-13-2011, and time stamp 8.08 AM.

    I did search the rest of my drive, but there is no one here by that name.

    What if I renamed the file that I found?

    Windows Vista SP2 is the operating system

    Any other Suggestions?
