When someone sends me a text message with photos, etc., I receive only the message "get media content now." When I tap on that, it says "getting media content," but nothing happens. I can do this a dozen times- still the same cycle. Any suggestions?

There are some good suggestions on here, but I'll tell you what just worked for me. I have a Windows Phone HTC 7. Was getting the media content message and realized it was only happening when my phone was using my home WIFI connection. When I turned it off under the settings icon on the phone the messages with pictures (also extra long messages from people with certain phone carriers) came through just fine. Hope this helps someone.

Text messages that have a picture attached are also called MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) messages. I would check if you have MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) enabled by your mobile operator.
Also there might be a problem with the MMS configuration on your device (there is no UI for end user to check) - what device are you using in what network? Is it open-market or branded device?
Also you need to have proper configuration for MMS service in your phone, see this thread about the possible issue with MMS configuration on branded phones:

I've had this a couple of times too. I'm in the UK and it's when I receive MMS from people on other (certain) mobile networks. On some I've had to press 'Get Media Content Now' up to 5 or so times to get the picture, I think it was a mixture of signal and the size of the picture. They all worked in the end though. What happens when you go to good signal and try it a few times? Thought this might help.

OMG, I had this problem for months and couldn't find an answer anywhere online. I spent a couple of hours online with AT&T customer support (including escalations) and they finally figured it out. In my case, it was not a phone problem or a problem with my service. I was running the March build on my Samsung Focus, and I had all of the correct settings. My service was provisioned for MMS and everything looked good in the first level call systems. However, there was some setting in the AT&T back-end systems which showed me still having an iPhone (my prior phone). The 2nd level tech support was able to issue some sort of engineering request to have the system fixed manually (seriously). It took them almost a week, but my MMS is now working perfectly (send & receive). I get my MMS messages with photos inline they way I used to on my iPhone. And, it turned out it was a problem in AT&T's systems and not the Windows Phone 7 phone.
I had the same problem with my HTC HD7 mobile (great mobile phone). 2 Degrees in New Zealand sorted it for me. Try HTC App "Connection Setup". Got MMS to work plus multiple text messages, which I'd had a problem with - brilliant !!! Back in business.
