Today I saw an update on my windows 7 laptop with kb 976902. It said that it is to allow future updates to install correctly and that after it was installed, I could not remove it. I looked on Knowledge Base for the article about it and it comes back with no results. I have read at some places that it is used by SP1 beta. I do not have SP1 Beta installed on my system.
Does anybody know what this update is for?

This isn't SP1 or beta software or even malware (perplexed9, use some common sense). It's an update that readies the system for when the service pack is released. This occured with the service packs for Vista too.
However this update should not have been released without proper documentation so it wouldn't surprise me if people hold off until there are notes available.

A few of our users installed this update over the weekend and now are having massive connectivity issues (i.e. no connections to either wired or wireless networks). is this a known problem with this update?
I am nearly sure this update might have fixed one problem ( Vista keyboard losing focus on USB ) that we had with our Aten CS 1784 switch since may 2010.
The Vista computer on the switcher was suddenly working . We did nothing else than enabeling of IPv6 (IPv6 was probarbly not a fix for this )
So then the W7 64 might have blocked the Vista computer in some way in the built in USB functions.
The enabeling of IPv6 is about network,
so then we think Microsdoft might have helped ATEN with theire new firmware upgrade.
If so, evering is fine for us now thank you .
No more keyboard losing focus on USB anymore on the Vista computer,
from the W7 64 maybe installed wrongly .

On 1/30/11 I shut down my win7 64bit to swap out my dvd drive. During shutdown an update was installed since I had updates set for automatic. I removed the old drive, installed new one and turned the computer back on. During bootup the new drive was discovered and driver update was attempted, it failed. I also found that my MagicJack had stopped working. I began troubleshooting MJ since it is my primary phone, I no longer have a landline. Nothing fixed the MJ, even plugging in another one which was working fine on a XP pro computer. I figured maybe it was related to the optical drive driver problem so I began working on that problem. After several attempts getting the new drive working I took it out and reinstalled the old drive which had been working fine before the shutdown. Now the old drive had the same problem, installation of the driver failed. Now I am suspecting the update and researched the update just installed, KB976902. After finding other users having problems with it I set about trying to get rid of it. I see after the fact the warning that it cannot be uninstalled. Now I believe my only hope other than a complete clean install of 7 is to restore the computer to an earlier date. I don't recall ever having any success (maybe once or twice) of restoring to an earlier date which I had tried on several occasions with xp, vista and 7 on different computers with differing problems, but, what the hey, it can't hurt.
Plug and pray? Hallelujah, the restore worked, the KB976902 now does not show up as an installed update and the new drive and MagicJack are now working normally. I now have updates set for only notifying of new updates and let me decide whether to install. No more updates until I research to see what others are experiencing. Win7 is working fine for me as it is, do I need a service pack? hmmm
