Today I saw an update on my windows 7 laptop with kb 976902. It said that it is to allow future updates to install correctly and that after it was installed, I could not remove it. I looked on Knowledge Base for the article about it and it comes back with no results. I have read at some places that it is used by SP1 beta. I do not have SP1 Beta installed on my system.
Does anybody know what this update is for?

This isn't SP1 or beta software or even malware (perplexed9, use some common sense). It's an update that readies the system for when the service pack is released. This occured with the service packs for Vista too.
However this update should not have been released without proper documentation so it wouldn't surprise me if people hold off until there are notes available.

I think I'll wait and see before I do anything.
* I'm curious if a making a System Image before installing this Update will provide some kind of a 'Safety net' in case it makes things worse and I want to remove it.
I'm Pretty sure this update is some kind of pirate copy of windows / software detection tool. Witch look if your copy of windows is legit and allow you to install Win7 SP1 later on if Win7 is legit copy.
Reason why update description do not tell this directly is propably MS attempt to misguide people to install it they kind of tell that it allow you to install updates later on but still do not tell directly that is is anti piracy illigal copy detection tool or some kind of DRM tool.
And I'm not pirate and all my software have legit licenses but I just saw description of this uppdate a little odd.
I thought the description of Vista being a wonderful new stable Operating System a little odd too. I think I'll 'Hide' this update and take it under advisement as to whether I should install it or not. Microsoft wouldn't lie to us about anything, would they? Nah!
