Windows 7 (KB976902) to enable future updates.

Today I saw an update on my windows 7 laptop with kb 976902.  It said that it is to allow future updates to install correctly and that after it was installed, I could not remove it.  I looked on Knowledge Base for the article about it and it comes back with no results.  I have read at some places that it is used by SP1 beta.  I do not have SP1 Beta installed on my system.

Does anybody know what this update is for?

This isn't SP1 or beta software or even malware (perplexed9, use some common sense). It's an update that readies the system for when the service pack is released. This occured with the service packs for Vista too.

However this update should not have been released without proper documentation so it wouldn't surprise me if people hold off until there are notes available.

    I never installed or downloaded this update (kb 976902) for my personal computer as it looked odd I went to look documentation witch wasn’t there. Now it looks like this update marked as important has disappeared from WU.

    I saw this update odd because of time of release, no documentation and because of very small size. I’m last year student of computer sciences and my major are networking and information data security.

    This is exactly the reason why I disable all auto update features from all of my computer systems I do not want WU to install any updates automatically in my personal computer in case that WU is hacked. It is just so temptation to think of scenario where WU is hacked and malicious code is pushed inside millions of Win7 users all around the world trough auto update.

    I was hoping to first analyze this update by installing it first on Virtual Win7 operating system and log all chances it makes to Virtual OS but now update is gone without explanation. MS staying silent is just clarifying my doubt towards security of WU servers. MS Should really improve their practice of realeasing updates and ways of users to confirm that updates are legit.

    I don't agree, if you select Download updates but let me choose whether to install them, the updates will be installed when you try toshut down your computer. In fact I don't see an option to shut down without installing them.

    I have selected Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them and then updates are installed only when I open Windows Update and click on theInstall updates button.

    PS: Why do this thing always remove the space before bold text, I edited several times and it still removes it and looks ugly?
