Windows 7 (KB976902) to enable future updates.

Today I saw an update on my windows 7 laptop with kb 976902.  It said that it is to allow future updates to install correctly and that after it was installed, I could not remove it.  I looked on Knowledge Base for the article about it and it comes back with no results.  I have read at some places that it is used by SP1 beta.  I do not have SP1 Beta installed on my system.

Does anybody know what this update is for?

This isn't SP1 or beta software or even malware (perplexed9, use some common sense). It's an update that readies the system for when the service pack is released. This occured with the service packs for Vista too.

However this update should not have been released without proper documentation so it wouldn't surprise me if people hold off until there are notes available.

    Thomas, how do you know that any of the packages you get from Windows Update are from Microsoft? The fact that they're in the Windows Update system and digitally signed by Microsoft makes it seem more like they're from Microsoft than the fact that there's a matching KB article.

    The update was pulled somewhere between 2:37AM and 3:56AM EDT, oddly shortly after I posted that Microsoft wouldn't care about this. Lol, I was wrong.

    No, they didn't make a single change to your system. The update was removed from their list of updates available. When your computer syncs with their list to see what is available, it's just no longer showing as available.

    This log shows that the update was indeed downloaded yesterday, hidden, then somehow extracted and retrieved by Microsoft. It is no longer hidden, it is no longer stored anywhere on my system, and the available free space on my drive has increased accordingly. Huh!

    Thanks, MowGreen. All I needed was the filename though, to grab it. My system was getting the express install cab. I don't know how our systems are configured differently, but it's interesting that you got the regular msu file. Maybe because you don't have your system to download updates automatically and then prompt your for install, but rather just have it set to prompt you to download and install?

    Zuhl3156, where does it say it deleted the file from your HD in that log, and can you really tell that your HD space grew by a few KB? Look in yourC:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download directory for a folder dated the time it was downloaded.
