Today I saw an update on my windows 7 laptop with kb 976902. It said that it is to allow future updates to install correctly and that after it was installed, I could not remove it. I looked on Knowledge Base for the article about it and it comes back with no results. I have read at some places that it is used by SP1 beta. I do not have SP1 Beta installed on my system.
Does anybody know what this update is for?

This isn't SP1 or beta software or even malware (perplexed9, use some common sense). It's an update that readies the system for when the service pack is released. This occured with the service packs for Vista too.
However this update should not have been released without proper documentation so it wouldn't surprise me if people hold off until there are notes available.

Yes, it appears to have been pulled.
LT: Inadvertently installed it early yesterday AM without checking for MS documentation (as I usually do for all patches before installing), (Bummer). That said, no apparent ill effects, as of now.
DT 1: Found this thread before installing it, so opted to wait, but did not hide it (I did install the other 3 patches). As of 7:30 last night, it was still listed as an "important" update that was available, with the customary WU alert icon in the system tray. At 8:30 last night, WU automatically checked for updates and <poof!> KB976902 was gone from the list. WU now says I am up-to-date, with no available important updates, and no WU system tray notification icon.
Vanishing black hole, indeed!

what a mess.
I chose not to install this update, but did install the other 3. However, when I shut down my computer last night, I noticed updates were installing. This morning my update history shows the item was indeed installed!
I have updates scheduled to download updates but let me choose whether to install them. Incidently, this is not the first time updates have installed without my permission. Can anyone explain? Thanks
