Today I saw an update on my windows 7 laptop with kb 976902. It said that it is to allow future updates to install correctly and that after it was installed, I could not remove it. I looked on Knowledge Base for the article about it and it comes back with no results. I have read at some places that it is used by SP1 beta. I do not have SP1 Beta installed on my system.
Does anybody know what this update is for?

This isn't SP1 or beta software or even malware (perplexed9, use some common sense). It's an update that readies the system for when the service pack is released. This occured with the service packs for Vista too.
However this update should not have been released without proper documentation so it wouldn't surprise me if people hold off until there are notes available.

Just one more burning question...
What happened to the systems that the update was installed on? Did Microsoft find a way to 'reach' in, uninstall it, and snag it back? Or is it still there?
Zuhl3156 - The update was never on your system, just the information that an update was available. So Microsoft didn't reach into your system, they just removed the update from their server. You probably then re-checked for updates, this would have downloaded the lastest list of available updates and because the hidden update was no longer available, it wasn't offered to you.
i dunno whats going on all i know is i got 4 updates and for some reason when that update installed something went wrong cuz the kb 2388210 failed to install on the 64bit verson of windows 7 then the failed update came back and installed
then the same thing happened on my 32bit version of windows 7 but kb 2249857 failed to install then the failed update came back and installed.
i got a error code as well its 80080005 so i went thru the troubleshooter for windows update and nothing was found and it said everything was working fine so i dunno what happen but those two updates came back. maybe it was the kb976902 that caused the problem.
