Today I saw an update on my windows 7 laptop with kb 976902. It said that it is to allow future updates to install correctly and that after it was installed, I could not remove it. I looked on Knowledge Base for the article about it and it comes back with no results. I have read at some places that it is used by SP1 beta. I do not have SP1 Beta installed on my system.
Does anybody know what this update is for?

This isn't SP1 or beta software or even malware (perplexed9, use some common sense). It's an update that readies the system for when the service pack is released. This occured with the service packs for Vista too.
However this update should not have been released without proper documentation so it wouldn't surprise me if people hold off until there are notes available.

I would also like to know exactly what this is. Where is the KB article? It's still showing as pending on my main 7 system... I made a VM using Virtualbox so I could TEST this update before installing it, and low and behold the update is NOT THERE. Same exact OS. Made the VM last night.
Maybe I'll capture the update tomorrow and rip it apart in installshield.
By the way, Click "More Information" in the Update showing in Windows Update, it gives you this:
"Sorry, but we couldn't find the page that you requested. Please refine your search or try one of the other helpful links that are provided here."
I just had a question posed in another thread:
User "can'tRecall" has a Stack Hash error when trying to update to the latest DirectX. Is this because he didn't install the 'Blackhole update' or because he did? Or is this totally unrelated?
I'd like to just correct a few things that I've read.
The update was being shown as 4.3 MB on Windows 7 32bit and 10.2 MB on Windows 7 64bit. The actual express install package though, was only 30.4 KB.
Andrew if you manage to "rip it apart in installshield", let me know, because so far I've only been able to find it as an express install package.
Additionally, as one of the first ones to analyze this and blog on it, and still on the first page of the search results, I'll have to say that my logs don't show enough traffic to think that most people care. Definitely not enough for Microsoft to notice.
