Today I saw an update on my windows 7 laptop with kb 976902. It said that it is to allow future updates to install correctly and that after it was installed, I could not remove it. I looked on Knowledge Base for the article about it and it comes back with no results. I have read at some places that it is used by SP1 beta. I do not have SP1 Beta installed on my system.
Does anybody know what this update is for?

This isn't SP1 or beta software or even malware (perplexed9, use some common sense). It's an update that readies the system for when the service pack is released. This occured with the service packs for Vista too.
However this update should not have been released without proper documentation so it wouldn't surprise me if people hold off until there are notes available.

I would just like to make it apparent...
That when hiding the installation of 'KB976902'. When then going into 'Restore hidden updates' it is not apparent in the list. When scanning for new updates windows does not find this update.
Seems to totally disappear from windows update altogether... Now i am not sure if this is in anyway 'shady' but just thought i should make it apparent as it is quite odd for an 'important' update to just go missing like that. aka or as been mentioned it seems to have disappeared into a 'black hole'

You can certainly hide the update, though you all know the link will be fixed soon.
How many of you actually review the wording of each update, compare it to what’s published elsewhere and then compare what the update actually touches in the OS on a test machine prior to installing it? My bet is not many of you actually go to these lengths, so does the KB wording really tell you anything more than the Update details in my opinion not really
Well, just in case people care, after installing the RC of 7 SP1, this update is installed along with it.
I think this has appeared on Windows update because the download version of the service pack is smaller, and things like this are cut out. So it becomes available as a seperate download. So one of two things have happened. Either the servicing stack update went onto Windows update along with the RC of SP1 (which you need a signup tool to see) but they made the mistake of not protecting the servicing stack update like the service pack. Or the servicing stack is finalised so they have released that ahead of the SP.
I personally think that it was put onto the main Windows Update by mistake, this isn't the first time I've seen it. So for now do what you want, it will only become an issue with the release of the service pack anyway.
Any samples given are not meant to have error checking or show best practices. They are meant to just illustrate a point. I may also give inefficient code or introduce some problems to discourage copy/paste coding. This is because the major point of my posts is to aid in the learning process.
