Today I saw an update on my windows 7 laptop with kb 976902. It said that it is to allow future updates to install correctly and that after it was installed, I could not remove it. I looked on Knowledge Base for the article about it and it comes back with no results. I have read at some places that it is used by SP1 beta. I do not have SP1 Beta installed on my system.
Does anybody know what this update is for?

This isn't SP1 or beta software or even malware (perplexed9, use some common sense). It's an update that readies the system for when the service pack is released. This occured with the service packs for Vista too.
However this update should not have been released without proper documentation so it wouldn't surprise me if people hold off until there are notes available.

On 09 May 2011, KB976902 was replaced by KB2533552 => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2533552/
Note: Effective 10 May 2011, KB2533552 is being offered by Windows Update and is a Prerequisite Update for Win7 SP1 (i.e., KB2533552 must be installed before SP1 will be offered and before SP1 will successfully install).
Note: Support for Win7 Gold (no Service Packs) ended on 09 April 2013. Computers still running Win7 Gold will not be offered any further updates [i.e., updates released after 09 April 2013] until SP1 has been installed (which will require that all Prerequisite Updates be installed first).
jw, this update is used to enable executable code to be uploaded into the microsoft OS environment.
It is unique and in my opinion was meant to round up and shut down those doing legitimate investigations using the same licenses when rebuilding the hard drives.
...nearly 4 years later I try to persevere but I must admit I got my butt kicked virtually as resources were dedicated to make my like miserable.
