Today I saw an update on my windows 7 laptop with kb 976902. It said that it is to allow future updates to install correctly and that after it was installed, I could not remove it. I looked on Knowledge Base for the article about it and it comes back with no results. I have read at some places that it is used by SP1 beta. I do not have SP1 Beta installed on my system.
Does anybody know what this update is for?

This isn't SP1 or beta software or even malware (perplexed9, use some common sense). It's an update that readies the system for when the service pack is released. This occured with the service packs for Vista too.
However this update should not have been released without proper documentation so it wouldn't surprise me if people hold off until there are notes available.

Alright, i found this article online, it looks to be official, it says that Microsoft released the update prematurely.
It even links to this thread saying that the "MVP"'s are saying not to update, but Microsoft said it does not affect the system.

And Julia, i agree with Aerpoweron. Use ubuntu live CD. Make sure you burn it as an image though, not as a data cd. Also make sure you have all your application Cd's.
Hello Julia, you can try rescue your data with an Ubuntu Linux live CD. You can usually acess all you data, even you profile data with it. Save all you nee, and make a clean install.
Since you are writing here, you should have a working pc. So download the live cd image and burn it on a cd or dvd, and boot up from it. Save you date to a second hard disk or external one. Then you can start your new Windows installation.
I have no issues so far with that update from MS. No additional Updates were installed (update history) and i have turned off my automaticly Updating. PC running fine, but i just restartet 3 times since i got that update. But i still want to see some documentation for that update :-(

I'm in a similar situation - except that when it installed on my PC, it corrupted my administrator profile and decided to place a password against it so that nothing I try can get past the request for a password to allow changes to be made to profiles or the hard disk! I have never put a password against my profile on this PC and have tried all the obvious ones, in case it picked something up from somewhere else in the system.
As others have reported, in the list of updates the option to uninstall is not available for KB976902.
Any suggestions anyone?
