Today I saw an update on my windows 7 laptop with kb 976902. It said that it is to allow future updates to install correctly and that after it was installed, I could not remove it. I looked on Knowledge Base for the article about it and it comes back with no results. I have read at some places that it is used by SP1 beta. I do not have SP1 Beta installed on my system.
Does anybody know what this update is for?

This isn't SP1 or beta software or even malware (perplexed9, use some common sense). It's an update that readies the system for when the service pack is released. This occured with the service packs for Vista too.
However this update should not have been released without proper documentation so it wouldn't surprise me if people hold off until there are notes available.

...The update-known-as-KB976902 has been available to Win7 SP1 Beta testers since June 2010 (if not earlier) and there's STILL no corresponding KB article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976902) even though Win7 SP1 Release Candidate became available on 26 Oct-10...

According to KB894199, this update will be (re)released on 11 January 2011 and will be a Prerequisite Update for Win7 (and Windows Server 2008 R2) Service Pack 1 when it is released (later this year).
IOW, SP1 will NOT install (or be offered by Windows Update) unless & until KB976902 is installed. So if you've hidden it and it's not been automagically unhidden, you will have to unhide it manually.

See if it is hiding in here, open the Start Menu and type --> %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download
...in the Search box. That's where mine is hiding, in one of those folders from whenever I first downloaded and hid it.
