Today I saw an update on my windows 7 laptop with kb 976902. It said that it is to allow future updates to install correctly and that after it was installed, I could not remove it. I looked on Knowledge Base for the article about it and it comes back with no results. I have read at some places that it is used by SP1 beta. I do not have SP1 Beta installed on my system.
Does anybody know what this update is for?

This isn't SP1 or beta software or even malware (perplexed9, use some common sense). It's an update that readies the system for when the service pack is released. This occured with the service packs for Vista too.
However this update should not have been released without proper documentation so it wouldn't surprise me if people hold off until there are notes available.

According to KB894199, this update was (re)released on 11 January 2011 and is a Prerequisite Update for Win7 (and Windows Server 2008 R2) Service Pack 1 when it is released.
IOW, SP1 will NOT install (or be offered by Windows Update) unless & until KB976902 is installed.

Yes but this update is listed as an "Important" update, however like the ET Phone home update (KB971033) it is unchecked. Therefore it is not installed and if a prerequisite to Windows 7 SP1 there is going to be a problem sometime down the road.

Hello from Canada.
It's snowing outside, and I'm up to my knees in snow. That and the cold winter air makes my breath fall to the ground like a chunk of ice. So, I decided to go indoors and download some Windows Updates this evening.
Seriously now, I too got the message on Jan. 11 about the windows 7 update kb 976902. I installed it this evening without any problems on my x64 version of Win 7 pro. Everything seems to be working fine so far. If it didn't, I wouldn't be writing this. Anyway, no reboot required. Microsoft has support information available for this update, and I went through it before installing.

The only other update that claimed was important and didn't come pre checked in the box was (KB71033)which called home.
