What is Microsoft Silverlight and why do I need it?

Can someone explain the benefits of MS Silverlight (both Pros and Cons)? Sorry to ask and I might be able to figure it out if I had time to open it up and see exactly each feature does, but just from opening the program up for the first time; I'm not sure that I need it or what it is for exactly? Thanks in advance for any insight someone can give me.

You need it if you want to go to web pages that use it. If you don't,

you don't need it.

As far as I'm concerned, you should have it, since it gives you the

ability to go to web pages you might want.

Why not ask in the SilverLight Community and Forums where it is

supported rather than here where it is not supported?

The below is extremely vague.

"Microsoft Silverlight is a powerful tool for creating and delivering rich Internet applications and media experiences on the Web."

I get that it's a so-called powerful tool for developers (still vague), but for an average end user, what's so special about Silverlight?

Thank you for your input. I have given up on it. If it's for developers, I can't believe I am one and therefore, perhaps I don't need it. That definition is quite vague and even though I haven't looked at the site, I'm betting it would make for more confusion than resolution. I'll be with my sons next week, and they are a lot more computer savvy than I am. Perhaps they will have a logical answer. If so, and if I can understand it, I'll try to remember to post it. Thanks again.
