What is Microsoft Silverlight and why do I need it?

Can someone explain the benefits of MS Silverlight (both Pros and Cons)? Sorry to ask and I might be able to figure it out if I had time to open it up and see exactly each feature does, but just from opening the program up for the first time; I'm not sure that I need it or what it is for exactly? Thanks in advance for any insight someone can give me.

You need it if you want to go to web pages that use it. If you don't,

you don't need it.

As far as I'm concerned, you should have it, since it gives you the

ability to go to web pages you might want.

Yep - have to agree.

All I want is my notebook or tablet to work adequately. I'm not super tech savvy nor do I want to spend ages trying to fix something I never asked for.

Didn't even know Silverlight had been part of an update. Last night I read up on it. Google ads on my homepage made me look at why my notebook was so slow and froze every time I wanted to change the page.

So - I uninstalled Google toolbar, Microsoft Silverlight and bam - the problems I've been having have gone. Have no idea if Google toolbar has made a difference but a thread I read suggested I uninstall all toolbars and test the difference. I still have the painful Google ads appearing but I guess that's the future but no Silverlight seems to equal better performance. Tough if you rely on Silverlight - guess I won't be going to your website anytime soon.

Also - have to say - I want Hotmail back. Outlook conversion is terrible. Bad job Microsoft.

To uninstall Silverlight it says I need to download another program - I'm sure when I do, it'll fkup my computer - ads and flashes and all that, so that I'll have to sit at the Control Panel and uninstall all the new s...t. ******@pacbell.net Norma

I think your problem is having your machine set to automatic updates. I get notification of updates available. Silverlight shows and I uncheck it. Then I click update, then install, then machine has to be turned off and back on in order to complete the installation.

Some other stuff shows - shown as not critical. I don't download those. I'm content with e mail, access to WQXR etc., and other internet sites. I try hard not to live on the computer...

I have an excellent tech - have had for maybe 10 years - if you want more help.
