What is Microsoft Silverlight and why do I need it?

Can someone explain the benefits of MS Silverlight (both Pros and Cons)? Sorry to ask and I might be able to figure it out if I had time to open it up and see exactly each feature does, but just from opening the program up for the first time; I'm not sure that I need it or what it is for exactly? Thanks in advance for any insight someone can give me.

You need it if you want to go to web pages that use it. If you don't,

you don't need it.

As far as I'm concerned, you should have it, since it gives you the

ability to go to web pages you might want.

    Your answer was not at all helpful.  I don't understand why anyone would say it was.  You don't bother to explain IN WHAT WAY a website would use Silverlight....which is really what people need to know.  Why wouldn't you you explain WHAT IT IS, and WHY IT'S NEEDED on some websites.  It's shameful that a person who is a company representative would give an "answer" such as yours.

    Most appropriate story I've heard:

    A fellow was coasting about in a hot air balloon, when a horrible storm arose, with fierce winds blowing for hours, taking him who knows where. Eventually, he lands in a field. A local fellow walks up, so the balloonist asks him where he has landed. The local man tells him that he is in a pasture surrounded by cows. The balloonist tells the local fellow that he must be a philosopher. The local man wants to know how he could have known such a thing. The balloonist replies that it is because the man has given him an answer that is at the same time 100% correct and 100% useless. The fine folks at Microsoft and Silverlight must also be philosophers, because all their answers fall into the same category. NEEDING to go to a community, a forum, a user group, or any other place for information is ridiculous. Microsoft and Silverlight will not, because it is not in their nature. It is not even in their nature to understand why we mere mortals suffer angst at their obfuscatory non-answers and pointless, prattling prose. It's like your dad getting angry when you said the lollipop was red flavored, and you not understanding why he would be angry.

    ....Seems I can never get a direct answer concerning any problems I have with MSN. Their technical support is extremely hard to find and recieve an answer. As much much as MS makes, it seems to me they would much more attentive to their customer needs and problems. These "updated" pages only seem to make it more diffiicut. Too bad for them. Silverlight is just one of those issuse. PItty.

    Have to agree with you on that one.  Microsoft's free tech support is almost non-existant and really ****!  Apple on the other hand dances rings around them in the tech support arena. Didn't realize just how bad MSs was until I got an iPad and had to look up stuff. Apple went out of their way to make free tech support available and easy to navigate.
