What is Microsoft Silverlight and why do I need it?

Can someone explain the benefits of MS Silverlight (both Pros and Cons)? Sorry to ask and I might be able to figure it out if I had time to open it up and see exactly each feature does, but just from opening the program up for the first time; I'm not sure that I need it or what it is for exactly? Thanks in advance for any insight someone can give me.

You need it if you want to go to web pages that use it. If you don't,

you don't need it.

As far as I'm concerned, you should have it, since it gives you the

ability to go to web pages you might want.

    I agree, the "experts" are being quite vague considering that they KNOW those asking the question aren't developers.  Here's what that website says about it:

    Microsoft Silverlight is a powerful tool for creating and delivering rich Internet applications and media experiences on the Web. Silverlight 5 builds on the foundation of Silverlight 4 for building business applications and premium media experiences. Silverlight 5 introduces more than 40 new features, including dramatic video quality and performance improvements as well as features that improve developer productivity.

    Since I'm not a developer, I guess it has no uses for me!

    u dont need it i never had it and just like a week a go Globel tech. added it to my computer so i ask.t them what it is and do i "really" need it they said not really its just a add on takes up momery space so i took it off the performince of my computer up.t a little but it opens faster gose to pages quicker so the thing is if u dont use/think u need some thing remove it u can all way's ddown load it of the internet 24-7 and the less program[s] u have the more performance sterability not to mintion it will last longer... keep in mind when u go to a pusific web site like this one most of these ansers come from the people that desinged silver light of corse there gonna say u need it......!!!?
