What is Microsoft Silverlight and why do I need it?

It deleted my Canon Image Class printer drivers.  If I delete the update, will my printers drivers come back?

You need it if you want to go to web pages that use it. If you don't,

you don't need it.

As far as I'm concerned, you should have it, since it gives you the

ability to go to web pages you might want.

I really like Ken Blake's solutions.  They are practical and to the point ( for example:  Why do we need Silverlight?)  Whenever I log in, many other people have the same question as I.  If there's more clarity needed in order to answer adequately, Mr. Blake asks appropriate questions and delivers solutions in a respectful, non-condescending manner.  While many of us are fluent in other areas, we often feel lame in the quickly-changing language of computer technology.  I, for one, appreciate being treated like a human being with brains--however unattached they may seem to computer professionals at times! True professionals don't talk down to others.

If it is so wonderful why does it crash all the time. For example every time I open my mail in hotmail, whether it is with IE or Google chrome. If it crashes in IE it does not allow me to compose mail

Silverlight sounds like my experience with Windows 10. I loaded the free upgrade Windows 10. 

Now, If I step away from my pc and it goes to sleep, it now crashes every time and gives me a count down 1 to 100 and then "blue screen" error code. Sometimes I can restart it and sometimes I have to wait overnight to be able to restart.

Question - would you like a free Windows 10 down load too?

You have other issues, and the first thing to do is use you Control Panel and turn off the hibernation while you are downloading stuff like that.

The next thing is to remove peripherals and cards down to a basic state that you can install from.

The third thing is to use the search function here, that has been asked and answered a few times in  well over half a year and there are plenty of avenues to pursue here as well as elsewhere on the internet.

The 1 to 100 thing with the circle is the installation progress indicator. If you get a BSOD error try and note the code, take a picture of it and look it up as it will tell you a lot about where to look if not exactly what.
