What is Microsoft Silverlight and why do I need it?

Can someone explain the benefits of MS Silverlight (both Pros and Cons)? Sorry to ask and I might be able to figure it out if I had time to open it up and see exactly each feature does, but just from opening the program up for the first time; I'm not sure that I need it or what it is for exactly? Thanks in advance for any insight someone can give me.

You need it if you want to go to web pages that use it. If you don't,

you don't need it.

As far as I'm concerned, you should have it, since it gives you the

ability to go to web pages you might want.

    I just spent quite a bit of time cleaning up the registry of my computer and noticed that Silverlight had left oodles of entries in the registry, presumably after auto-updating itself. There was an entry for each country in the world eg. it, ru, nl, ro, etc. and probably for each dialect in each of those countries as well. It looked like Silverlight had updated itself three times on my computer, because there was a list of those country entries for three different versions of Silverlight. My computer appears to be a lot snappier now after deleting these entries. TweakBit PCRepairKit or similar software will do a good job deleting these entries for you. I left the latest version of Silverlight on my computer as I think it's there to show certain video formats in internet browsers.

    I couldn't agree more! Every time I have a problem with Microsoft they blame it on the browser  (Firefox 12.0 currently) or send me on some "wild goose" chase with one of their links. Not one time has one of their links ever solved my problem! I was told to uninstall/reinstall Silverlight to solve my current problem. Did it work? Of course not. They won't even tell you what it does! They just shove another link at you. IE8 sucks, bing sucks, Microsoft tech support sucks basically all of Microsoft sucks!
