When I look at the table of file extensions I see a prticular program indicated, and that program is the program that starts up when I click on any shortcut. I see no way of changing that so that when I click on Internet Explorer, for example, Internet Explorer comes up instead of the wrong program.

I had the same problem. I solved it by downloading http://www.creativelement.com/powertools/ and then running the program (from the directory, as none of my shortcuts were working) "File Type Doctor". When I selected ".lnk" in the extension list it said in the Actions in the Right Click Menu:
"(user choice override)" in red ... and
"Open"
I then removed the "(user choice override)" and that was it. All the shortcuts were working again, just like they used to.

Nicole, make sure you are looking for the LNK (but all lower case) extension, not INK.
Im having the same problem, ive downloaded the software, but it doesnt have user choice override or open on the right handside. Totally confused!
....after downloading, running the program and selecting ".lnk" in the selection list, "Actions" does not include/displays anything. Any other suggestions?

I find this absolutley rediculous to have to download a whole different program to do all that.
The problem is the fact the format of the shortcuts that are created from your main files are in a different type. I don't know if any of ya'll noticed, but when you actually opened up C:/ Windows / program files / and whatever file the was , the application to the file is still there, its just the fact that the SHORTCUT is in a different format.
(My Example is i changed my Diablo 2 by " open with" and i accidently clicked on Warcraft 3, and of course, it opened Warcraft 3 but when it did that, it changed ALL my formats of shortcuts to open Warcraft 3. i can change it to Internet Explorer, shoot, i can change it to adobe photoshop, but still, it does me no good.)

The format for the shortcuts was / ARE still in the memory bank of the computer, you have to find that of which executes the Application .exe file.......
