On XP, I used to communicate through my network for fun via netsend.
I've googled, and apparently msg.exe replaced it in vista?
What about Win7?

Welcome to Microsoft Windows 7 Forums.
Windows 7 does not support msg.exe and net send commands to send messages over network.

We have a lot of customers that moved from standard Net Send and WinPopup (Windows 9x) to our IM software. Avoid these "old" and non-secure messaging tools because they use broadcast messages to find and reach recipients over a local network.
If you really need something light-weight, fast, secure and handy for use take a look over download archives. I can advise you to focus only on a client/server software because it provides a centralized management, maybe a history archive too.
