How to Troubleshoot Bluetooth devices!

I just bought a new laptop that supports Bluetooth and when try to connect my Bluetooth phone, mouse and headphones things just don’t work. I’m not making any progress. I’m having trouble getting these set up and working properly. Can someone point me to some general Bluetooth troubleshooting information that might help?

Basic troubleshooting usually starts the same as with any other type of hardware devices. Try the following:

·         Make sure that the devices are supported by your operating system and then

·         Go to the manufacturer’s web site and download the latest version of software or drivers for those devices. While you’re there you might browse the site to see if there are known issues or other information for your device.

·         Make sure the Bluetooth device is listed in the Bluetooth Devices Browser in the Control Panel (keep in mind that some Bluetooth devices may install a custom dialog window for their device in the control panel).

·         Make sure that you’re system is up to date on any service packs and other updates for your operating system

    airfirehorse:  In Windows 7, we introduced an attempt to automatically provide a default pin for HID mouse devices.  Additionally, devices using Bluetooth 2.1 can do "automatic" pairing (though it's unlikely any of your peripherals use this).  You should have been prompted to enter a pin on your keyboard, however.  You will find with many headsets a default pin is used as well.

    Todd, no suggestions on my problem two posts above? Also you asked me to start a new thread which I did but I have not heard anything since. Should I just give up?

    Yeah, I can't explain that, Todd. I never saw anything pop up at all except the driver notifications. They all went in fine for both the MS500 and Logitech MK700 keyboards, though, and the Logitech mouse. Maybe some kind of default handshaking went on behind the scenes? It worked anyway, so I'm satisfied.

    I'm having bluetooth problems also, but the mentioned problems I'm having is different.  I'm running Windows 7 and am using a HP Bluetooth bt500.  It is not just a straight bluetooth but also a printer adapter.  I'm trying to HotSync my phone to Palm's desktop on my PC.  With this bluetooth you have to create a virtual serial port, which I have done.  My problem is as I'm performing the HotSync, I get an error message "Unable to initiate HotSync operation because the port is in use by another application".  The COM port defined is COM6.  I'm assuming this is a Windows 7 problem because I had no problems under Vista.

    I spent and hour and half with Palm Support yesterday, but the person I talked to ONLY how to follow their scripted troubleshooting book.  I'm open to ANY suggesstions because I need to get this information on my computer.
