error code 0*80041004 while opening internet games in windows 7

while opening internet checkers & internet spades in windows 7 an error message is encountered stating "a network error occurred while communicating with the game server (error code: 0x80041004)". i searched the microsoft site for this error code & found that something called "hotfix" is needed to solve this issue. i downloaded that file. it was unzipped to c drive. but it did not solve my problem. that error message still comes. what to do next?

a)Is your computer connected to internet?

I will suggest you to reinstall the internet checkers & internet spades using Turn Windows features on or off and check if you come across the same problem.

You may follow the steps mentioned below:

1.      Click the Start button, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then click Turn Windows features on or off. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

2.      To turn a Windows feature on, select the check box next to the feature. To turn a Windows feature off, clear the check box. Click OK.

    Thanks limesparks.  I was guessing that the server was down, but didn't really know how to check that.  Is there actually a way to tell if the server is down?

    Online Games have been working all weekend on Windows XP.  I know it's old and all that, but just for gits and shiggles I took my old recovery disk and installed it on a virtual machine, and they worked from there too.

    The Microsoft Internet Game server is down and it would appear that the dude who's job it is to reset the server took off for the holiday weekend.   Its been down since Wednesday night; I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts it starts working again tomorrow (11/30/15) sometime after said dude gets in to work out there in Redmond. :P       

    Thank-you very much for this post. I've spent two full days running scans and even had Microsoft on a chat support line, and all they wanted to do was charge me for more software. However, I didn't do as they suggested and quickly ended our chat. My games also stopped working on Wednesday, so lets hope the server is back in action soon.
