Every few days, all the icons on my Win7 desktop rearrange themselves. Usually they move to the left edge of the screen. I laboriously move all the icons back to where I like them, and 3-10 days later, they all shift left again. I've found no pattern or event that might cause this -- but it's very annoying!
I've got Win7 build 7100 running on a Dell Latitude D830 laptop. Totally standard hardware and very little non-Microsoft software. In short, it's a pretty clean system.

To supplement Reyas.M.I.'s answer, Under View is the option to select the icon size, Auto arrange icons and Align icons to grid. The Sort by option includes Name, Size, Item type and Date modified. I suggest you check both View and Sort by.

Check whether "Auto Arrange" checked. To check this, right click on desktop and select "Arrange icons by".

To restore the icon layout on those occasions when they do revert to 'default' (changing resolution and
the dual monitors issues) I use the .msi version of Desktop Restore.
This is a very lightweight programs that works of the R/click Desktop Context Menu -
Don't know why people insist on a fix by MS. XP also required 3rd party software to do various
tweaks, and so it shall remain. Can't expect MS to fix all of the wants of billions of people.
They already add enough of what many consider bloat-ware without accommodating everyone.

Apparently there isn't an answer. I'm on windows 8.1 and have been through all the windows 7 versions and 8.0 then 8.1 and it is the same in all of them. The problem is probably in the profiles as mentioned in one of the responses but you are right......the is not solution given by anyone.

I agree there is no solution to this problem, after years of trying to find one, I have not and I am still so frustrated with this and that there is no fix. I've turned off and on every possible combination of arrangements and suggestions and everything still goes where it wants to no matter what. There is nonew software loaded, no new updates, not program, NOTHING at all that is on the computer or new, etc. that the 2 minutes before, but they move themselves, and Microsoft would at least come out and say "hey this is gong to happen" instead of just letting it happen and then ignoring when people are complaining about it!
