Windows 7 desktop icons keep rearranging themselves

Every few days, all the icons on my Win7 desktop rearrange themselves. Usually they move to the left edge of the screen. I laboriously move all the icons back to where I like them, and 3-10 days later, they all shift left again. I've found no pattern or event that might cause this -- but it's very annoying!

I've got Win7 build 7100 running on a Dell Latitude D830 laptop. Totally standard hardware and very little non-Microsoft software. In short, it's a pretty clean system.

To supplement Reyas.M.I.'s answer, Under View is the option to select the icon size, Auto arrange icons and Align icons to grid.  The Sort by option includes Name, Size, Item type and Date modified.  I suggest you check both View and Sort by.

Check whether "Auto Arrange" checked. To check this, right click on desktop and select "Arrange icons by".

I hope this helps.

Thanks and Regards, Reyas...

Basic stuff, and no it does not solve the problem.   if auto arrange is not checked the icons should not move unless I move them.    But they do.

Is it a bug or is it Microsoft once again resetting things to what they feel is better?  They reset my internet explorer settings regularly to be more 'secure'.  The problem is the companies I must interact with daily don't work with their 'safe ' settings so I am constantly going around to my 15 machines resetting them so my people can work.   This icon moving on their own seems like the same thing, wasting my time either moving icons or like this morning having to go find the programs and re-create shortcut icons because they are all gone.  This after a weekend update.  Thanks a bunch Microsoft.

What is your reason for changing the resolution? This sounds similar to what I experienced with my Win7 laptop. If I plugged it into my TV that would scramble the icons, but that was the only time it ever happened. I know no one wants to hear about a third party program, but since I felt the what I was doing was the culprit, I blamed myself and not Microsoft. One click with this tool put the icons back where they were.
