Windows 7 desktop icons keep rearranging themselves

Every few days, all the icons on my Win7 desktop rearrange themselves. Usually they move to the left edge of the screen. I laboriously move all the icons back to where I like them, and 3-10 days later, they all shift left again. I've found no pattern or event that might cause this -- but it's very annoying!

I've got Win7 build 7100 running on a Dell Latitude D830 laptop. Totally standard hardware and very little non-Microsoft software. In short, it's a pretty clean system.

To supplement Reyas.M.I.'s answer, Under View is the option to select the icon size, Auto arrange icons and Align icons to grid.  The Sort by option includes Name, Size, Item type and Date modified.  I suggest you check both View and Sort by.

Check whether "Auto Arrange" checked. To check this, right click on desktop and select "Arrange icons by".

I hope this helps.

Thanks and Regards, Reyas...

You clearly didn't even read the post. If auto-arrange were checked, the problem wouldn't be occurring over days, it would be happening instantly. The problem is that Windows does not save the icon's locations correctly and when the screen size changes, it alters the location of the icons. But as is typical of Microsoft, you're more interested in pretending to have solved the problem than you are in actually fixing it.

    Hi Bruce,

The PC's have a docked position while in Office and a undocked while out on the road, a monitor is attached to each and a 1920x1080 Monitor is used on all three pc's native resolutions on the laptops are 3840x2160.

When docked occasionally and not in all cases the Icons will re-arrange around (20) into random orders (Not always the same Alphabetical or Size or Type but Random).

We even went as far as to set the Resolution on th Laptops to 1920x1080 to check if this still occured when docked or undocked yep they stil rearranged themselves.

what is really bizarre though even with the Laptops not being docked the icons can magically rearrange themselves on startup.

Also noted that when Nvida updates are progreess the screen goes blank on all of the laptops and when the update is completed the Icons have rearranged themselves again.
