Suddenly all my desktop icons have green check marks on them.  What does it mean?  How do I fix them?

Hi,

Do you use norton 360? Norton -> Settings -> Backup Settings -> Backup Status Overlays -> OFF -> Apply.  After you run your next backup (you can do it manually) the check marks will disappear.

Hope this helps.

    Right, thanks Sage:

We now have many fixes but nobody has said why the X'es are there.

If they are there on purpose, what is the purpose?

Can they be turned off programatically? is it part of an interface? Can I control the X'es?

What program is turning them on? is it Norton?(or some other backup program).

    Eric

    Found resolution for issue here.

For users that do not use Norton there are bat files that will take care of the registry for non tech users.

    http://www.tenforums.com/general-discussion/13425-green-checkmark-my-apps-icons-desktop.html

Below will change the registry key

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID{018D5C66-4533-4307-9B53-224DE2ED1FE6}\ShellFolder

    Attributes DWORD

    f080004d (4034920525) = add

    f090004d (4035969101) = remove

In my case it was Verizon cloud backup showing which files were marked for backup.  I suspect others were seeing Xs because a similar program was displaying the selected files/folders to backup.
