Green check marks on desktop icons

Suddenly all my desktop icons have green check marks on them.  What does it mean?  How do I fix them?

Hi,

Do you use norton 360? Norton -> Settings -> Backup Settings -> Backup Status Overlays -> OFF -> Apply.  After you run your next backup (you can do it manually) the check marks will disappear.

    YOU NEED TO CONTACT MICROSOFT DEFENDER. I HAVE NOT SEND THE CHECK MARKS IN TWO YEARS!  SINCE NORTON TOLD ME HOW TO CHANGE MY SETTINGS.

    I CAN'T SPEAK FOR THOSE WHO DONOT HAVE NORTON'S, HOWEVER, I DID CALL THEM, AND THAT IS WHAT I WAS TOLD, THAT ALL MY DESKTOP ICONS WERE CLEARED AND GOOD, AND I HAVE NOT SEEN THE CHECK MARKS AGAIN.  ALSO THERE WAS A SETTING IN NORTON'S THAT ALLOWED THE GREEN CHECK MARKS

    FOR NOTIFICATIONS, SO I'D ALSO CHANGE TO DO NOT NOTIFY ME WHEN EVERYTHING IS GOOD.

    Perhaps I was being a bit sarcastic. SORRY.

    You could be right, but then why do the checkmarks go away when backup has run?

    Also many report having the green checkmarks when they do not have Norton installed, so that in not he whole answer.

    I never had Norton installed, I use Microsoft defender.

    The outstanding question remains, why are there checkmarks?

    THere are many different ways to get ride of them, but no good answer as to what put them there and why.

    The question was "What do the checkmarks mean?"

    From your answer, "the checkmarks go away after a backup"

    therefore, the checkmarks mean that you need to run a backup for those files.

    Strange to use green check marks to indicate that backup has not been run.

    Perhaps in your case but... NO... There are many more CORRECT reasons in this thread.

    I CONTACTED NORTONS, BECAUSE THEIR SOFTWARE PLACED THE CHECK MARKS ON MY  DESKTOP SOFTWARE, WHICH MEANT THE BACKUP WAS SUCCESSFUL.  ALSO, NORTON'S HAS A WAY THAT YOU CAN DISABLE BACKUP NOTIFICATION.  NO ISSUES FOR ME.
