Mr. Nadeem,
I have 3 external hard drives. I use them on both my Windows 10 desktop and my Windows 8.1 laptop.
2 of the external hard drives work fine on both devices.
1 of the external hard drives produces the following message on my Windows 10 desktop: "The remote procedure call failed". This message occurs intermittently on my Windows 10 desktop. This message is not generated on my Windows 8.1 laptop.
When I try to eject the hard drive from my Windows 10 desktop, I continually get the message: "This device is currently in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again." I have done so, yet this error message continues
even having left the desktop for hours on end. I do not believe anything is running that is accessing the hard drive such that it is "currently in use" for hours and hours in my absence. Remember, this is a hard drive to which I write and from which I read,
very quick, sporadic actions, not on-going use.
Using both my Windows 10 desktop and my Windows 8.1 laptop, I have scanned the external hard drive for errors. No errors exist.
Windows 10 performed updates last night. Windows laptop is fully up-to-date.
I never encountered this issue when my desktop was running Windows 7. Admittedly, I have encountered problems on a daily basis since my upgrade to Windows 10. This "free" upgrade has cost me hours upon hours of lost time, and higher blood pressure readings.
I run a full scan of Windows Defender every week. I have never had an issue. This problem has been on-going for over two weeks. I fully expect that Windows Defender has done its job well. Also note that my two other external hard drives are having no
issues thereby suggesting that the virus excuse cannot be made.
I have tried your suggestion. My "Remote Procedure Call" does not say "Started" as you say we should make sure; rather, mine says "Running" and I do not know how to change to "Started".
QUESTIONS:
- Would you concur with me that Windows 10 is the problem here?
- If not what could be the problem given that my Windows 8.1 laptop is having absolutely no difficulties and I did not experience the problem when I was running Windows 7?
I have asked two, well-articulated questions. Please respond by answering my questions such that a third grade child can understand your response. A response that does not answer my questions is useless. If you choose not to answer my questions then please
extend to me the courtesy of stating that you decline to answer my questions. Feel free to add any commentary, as long as you answer my 2 questions.
And, yes, this is the Microsoft Windows 10 problem du jour that I did not bargain for when I upgraded. Yes, I do have better things to do than to solve, daily, Microsoft problems that are inflicted upon me by Microsoft.
Thank you.
