Good article, describing certificates.  Link to Microsoft Tech article as well.  Thanks for the post.  As I previously described, (and mentioned in the article) Checking for Publisher's certifcate revocation can prevent fraudulent certificates.  I don't personally think this is a solution to disable the security, at least not permanently.  I further found that my previous thoughts about being logged on as administrator only appeared to work as other computers did not.  After carefully examinig the certificate, what I did was disable UAC as administrator and downloaded Java again.  Rebooted and enabled UAC after confirming that the certificate did not reappear.  Perhaps in this case (JAVA - only) some part of the update needed it disabled temporarily.

I have had this problem, it drove me nuts !  I solved it and sent the solution on to my family and friends:

Are any of you getting,  "Revocation Certificate for this site is not available"  and then you have to tick  'yes',  'no'  'view certificate'  ???

It slows everything down to a crawl and is  annoying especially if you use a site regularly and you know it's safe.

Here's what you do:  'start'   'control panel'   'internet options'

move from 'general'  to  'advanced'   scroll down and down and down until you see a gold-coloured lock in the 'security' section.

UNTICK     'Check For Publisher's Revocation'    then click  'Apply'  and  OK.

It's worked for me here and it's so much quicker on newspaper sites.

not a good idea, as is noted in the earlier reply of this thread, you are foregoing your security measures.
