Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service service.

Every so often, 1 in 50, my laptop is very slow to start-up I get the "Please Wait" before the login screen.  Once I do log in I get the error:  

"Failed to connect to a windows service.

Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service service. This problem prevents limited users from logging on to the system. As an administrative user, you can review the System Event Log for details about why the service didn't respond."

Aero seems to be disabled also and cannot be fixed without a restart.  This problem is getting to be bothersome and I need to know if it could be hardware related.  Thank you in advance for you help.

This works!!! 

 Reset the Winsock Catalog

  1. Open a Command Prompt as an Administrator.
  2. Type “netsh winsock reset” (without quotes) and press Enter.
  3. Restart the computer.

Hi,

Since when are you facing this issue?

Did you make any software or hardware changes to the computer recently?

Check if the System Event Notification Service is running or not. To check for the services

1.      Click on Start

2.      In the start Search box type Services

3.      Right Click on - RUN AS ADMIN

Check if the below mentioned services has the mentioned status and start up type.

System Event Notification Service            Started                 Automatic

Also, check the dependency services that are required for System Restore Service to run.

To check that double click on the service and click on the dependency tab.

For the system being slow you may try to improve the performance by optimizing Windows and check if that helps. Follow the link given below on how to optimize Windows.

The aero issue can be resolved by installing or reinstalling the updated graphics card drivers. You may check if any update for the Graphics card is available for your computer from the computer manufacturer.

    I found another solution!

    In my case the problems were:

    • Slow startup ("please wait" before login screen)
    • Could not connect to system event notification service
    • no Aero
    • NVidia Control Panel wasn't working
    • right click on desktop caused the wait thingy to rotate forever

    It all started about a week ago after doint some automatic windows update. I also had installed Soluto and Bing Desktop for quite a while, so them could be connected to the problem, but not the cause.

    THE SOLUTION:

    • Check the Event Viewer for a startup error with the text: "The Windows Presentation Foundation Font Cache 3.0.0.0 service hung on starting."
    • If you find it, delete the file Fontcache3.0.0.0.dat in %windir%\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local
    • Also you can set the start type of the service "Windows Presentation Foundation Font Cache 3.0.0.0" to manual, as you might not need it
    • Reboot
    • ???
    • Profit!

    SOME THOUGHTS:

    • I think the windows update which started the problems for me was some .net update
    • It broke the font cache service, which then hung forever at boot
    • This hang caused other services to start too late, therefor the message about cannot connect to the system event notification service.

    I am getting this issue since this evening.  My laptop is a Packard bell easynote TJ65.  Taking an eternity to load, black screen for ages .. I have no colour on my toolbar at the bottom of the screen, I dont know if that is the aero people have spoken about.  I cant manage with my laptop doing this so do I need to buy a new one .. this one isnt that old.  This is driving me crazy .  Till last week my laptop was fine, I was then told, when Mozilla Thunderbird loaded, that I needed to verify my account.  This involved changing my password as it wouldnt load.  I did all that by getting an email to another email account that I then responded to with the code they sent.  This got me back in but then I had a load of emails bounce back, saying they had suspicious content, which they didnt they were a few lines of text!  Now this .. is it all tied in. Everything was fine till I changed my password.  Thank you and sorry this was so long. Valerie
