Every so often, 1 in 50, my laptop is very slow to start-up I get the "Please Wait" before the login screen. Once I do log in I get the error:
"Failed to connect to a windows service.
Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service service. This problem prevents limited users from logging on to the system. As an administrative user, you can review the System Event Log for details about why the service didn't respond."
Aero seems to be disabled also and cannot be fixed without a restart. This problem is getting to be bothersome and I need to know if it could be hardware related. Thank you in advance for you help.

Hi,
Since when are you facing this issue?
Did you make any software or hardware changes to the computer recently?
Check if the System Event Notification Service is running or not. To check for the services
1. Click on Start
2. In the start Search box type Services
3. Right Click on - RUN AS ADMIN
Check if the below mentioned services has the mentioned status and start up type.
System Event Notification Service Started Automatic
Also, check the dependency services that are required for System Restore Service to run.
To check that double click on the service and click on the dependency tab.
For the system being slow you may try to improve the performance by optimizing Windows and check if that helps. Follow the link given below on how to optimize Windows.

The aero issue can be resolved by installing or reinstalling the updated graphics card drivers. You may check if any update for the Graphics card is available for your computer from the computer manufacturer.

I just got the same problems described above on not 1 but 2 computers that I just assembled this summer. I have googled for solutions, but not of them seem to work.
I am using a Hewlett-Packard TouchSmart tm2 Tablet PC, and I am experiencing the exact same problem, including the long "Please wait..." and no Aero. The "Please wait..." screen isn't on as long, but it is still on much longer than usual. I checked the status of the SENS and the service that it was dependent on, and both were running and set to start automatically.
This happens approximately once every three times I boot up my computer. It used to only happen very rarely, but since I reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows from scratch (after some poorly-written program apparently screwed up my registry) using the system restore discs that came with my computer, it has been happening much more often.
I found a way to work around it. If my computer was in this state, I would go to Services, restart the SENS (even though it was already running), then log off and log back in again. This usually works. On the rare occasion that it doesn't work, I restart the computer, at which point it usually hangs for a really long time (again with "Please wait...") and then I have to turn the computer off manually. The next time I turn the computer on, it usually runs properly, until today, when it had the same problem for the second time in a row.
Up until today, I had dismissed this as a minor annoyance, but when it happened to me twice in a row for the first time today, I knew I had to look for a permanent solution.
I don't know if the following is any help, but the System Event Log had this to say about the SENS supposedly starting successfully:
