Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service service.

Every so often, 1 in 50, my laptop is very slow to start-up I get the "Please Wait" before the login screen.  Once I do log in I get the error:  

"Failed to connect to a windows service.

Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service service. This problem prevents limited users from logging on to the system. As an administrative user, you can review the System Event Log for details about why the service didn't respond."

Aero seems to be disabled also and cannot be fixed without a restart.  This problem is getting to be bothersome and I need to know if it could be hardware related.  Thank you in advance for you help.

This works!!! 

 Reset the Winsock Catalog

  1. Open a Command Prompt as an Administrator.
  2. Type “netsh winsock reset” (without quotes) and press Enter.
  3. Restart the computer.

Hi,

Since when are you facing this issue?

Did you make any software or hardware changes to the computer recently?

Check if the System Event Notification Service is running or not. To check for the services

1.      Click on Start

2.      In the start Search box type Services

3.      Right Click on - RUN AS ADMIN

Check if the below mentioned services has the mentioned status and start up type.

System Event Notification Service            Started                 Automatic

Also, check the dependency services that are required for System Restore Service to run.

To check that double click on the service and click on the dependency tab.

For the system being slow you may try to improve the performance by optimizing Windows and check if that helps. Follow the link given below on how to optimize Windows.

The aero issue can be resolved by installing or reinstalling the updated graphics card drivers. You may check if any update for the Graphics card is available for your computer from the computer manufacturer.

    I have a problem where i forgot my password to my admin account so i tried to get on Safe Mode with command prompt and i when i tried logging into my guest account it said "Windows could not connect to the Sens service". PLEASE help ive been trying to get my password  back but i know two get it back but i just cant login!

    Have been having same problem on HP Elitebook 8540p since it was new.

    Sometimes the netsh winsock reset worked but mostly not.

    Wrinkle in my case was problem only (and always) occurred when starting up on battery power.

    Startup on power adapter or docking station was always OK.

    Updating IDT HD Audio CODEC driver to 6.10.6300.0 seems to have fixed it (so far).

    I think there are still three related problems in Windows itself:

    (1) It falsely insisted my audio driver was up-to-date, I had to download new one from HP

    (2) The reported problem with System Event Notification Service is just bogus - each time it reported this, the service was actually running.  It seems from this thread that all kinds of things can trigger this bogus fail condition

    (3) When it does fail like this, it  does so in a way that is ugly, misleading and time-wasting.  The opposite of a graceful failure.
