Hi svk1234,

Thanks for posting in Microsoft answers!

Check if Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service is disabled.

This behavior is by design. Disabling System Restore will limits the ongoing usefulness of System Restore on the computer.

To re-enable, please try:

  1. Open gpedit.msc from Start Search box.
  2. Navigate to the following branch.

Computer Configuration\Administrative Template\System\System Restore.

  1. In the right pane, please configure the “Turn off system restore” policy. Please set it to Not Configured.

See the following link for similar issue : http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprosecurity/thread/0f2eebbe-6cdf-4ecc-93af-9249b7339ec9

Hope this helped

resolved system restore 0x81000203 error problem

How do I solve the following error: (0x81000203)

    1: Start button.

    • A: \Computer\Right Click Properties\System Protection \System Protection Tab\
    • B: If you see, “Searching...” instead of, “C: (‘C’ drive)” – verifies a problem in middle of screen

2: Must verify that the 2 files, which causes the Restore Problems are set-up correctly

    • A: Microsoft Shadow Copy Provider - Needs to be set to "Automatic"
    • B: Volume Shadow Copy - Must be set to "Automatic"
    • C: SPP Notification Service - Must be set to "Automatic"
    • D. RPC End Point Mapper - Must be set to "Automatic"
    • E. COM+
    • Must be set to "Automatic"
    • F. DCOM
    • Must be set to "Automatic"

3: DON’T FORGET to actually start the services as that won’t happen until reboot unless you select start.

    4: Closed all opened applications.

    5: Test Restore Point: Start\Right Click Computer\Properties\System Protection \System Protection Tab\

    1. There is a delay when, "Searching..." was being displayed in the screen center.
    2. Wait, luckily, don’t end the process.
    3. It now shows    1: New Volume (L:\ off) and
      • 2: Local Disk (C: \ System Protection= on).

Someone solved it for me here in the posts. May I suggest you trace backwards the people who wrote what I should do. I know it will work. It did for me.

I have the same error but none of this is working.

This started when my backups started failing, I get the error code 0x80042302 which seems to indicate that VSS is not running. I checked this service and it is set to automatic and is running. Next I went to the System Restore System Protection and I get the error 0x81000203.

Backup is not working as system restore is not working.
