Windows Update Error: 80080005

Hello,

I have done pretty much everything under the sun to try and solve this issue I am having. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium and I'm experiencing this issue of not being able to retreive any Windows Updates. I will say that my family is running on a Linksys router and I have been told that the router does have Norton Software builtin. Could this be the issue? I have gone through numerous tutorials but none of them have resolved my issue!

Also, another family member of mine is using Windows XP and whenever they go to Windows Update, they get lead to Google. I think after researching this issue, we found out that they possibly have a bug of some sort. If anyone on here could please help me out with other possibilites on how to fix these problems or at least mine, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Hi Jordan,

It is possible that it could be corrupted. Let’s use the System File Checker (SFC) tool to see if it can find any missing or corrupted system files. If so, it will attempt to repair and/or replace them.  Follow these steps to run an SFC scan:

1.       Click Start

2.       In ‘Start Search’ type cmd, then right-click cmd and click Run as administrator (provide administrative credentials if prompted)

3.       At the command prompt type “sfc /scannow” (no quotes), and then press ENTER

When the SFC scan is complete test to see if the issue is resolved.

 I’m also wondering if Norton is playing a part in this issue. Is there any way you can disable it, or better yet uninstall it (if you have the means to reinstall it afterwards). If you do decided to uninstall it, be sure to use the Norton Removal Tool to get rid of any leftover bits and pieces.

    Alright, let me update you on what is going on. Kavita, I did perform the steps you had suggested. I did not have to disable the Windows Update service in the first place because it is already stopped; and no, I am not able to turn it on because I get an error saying that Windows could not start the service on the local computer also mentioning "Error 126: The specified module could not be found". I also attempted to rename the "softwaredistribution" folder but that still did not do anything.

    I did actually look at that other help link you supplied in your post but that too was unsuccessful. I conducted a search for the winhttp.dll file and it appears that I do have this file. You think that in any way it could be corrupt? Should I just go ahead and see if I can grab this file from another computer running Vista and paste it on to my computer?

    Iwas doing some research online for the error code you are receiving and found a post where a user tried a solution and it seemed to work.  You may want to give the following a try:

    Steveythehero -ive fixed the prblem at last here are the steps i used to fix the problem

    1. disable the service
    • go to the control panel and from there click on administrative tools
    • then click on services and scroll down to windows update and stop the service
    1. rename some files
    • then go to the primary drive where the Operating System is installed c: and click on windows file
    • search for softwaredistribution and rename it by putting some numbers on it like softwaredistribution111 or something like that
    1. restart the service
    • go back to services and start the service of windows update
    • then click on properties and set it form automatic (delayed) to automatic.

    and start up update and voila it will work

    if it still gives you a error code of 80070003 then go to the new software distribution service folder and delete all the content of the data store folder and the downloads folder and it should work but remember to disable the service before deleting the files otherwise Windows will not allow you to delete the files.

    Another solution suggested was to copy the winttp.dll file from another Vista machine and replace your existing one in C:\Windows\System32 directory

    Please let us know if this resolved your issue otherwise we can continue troubleshooting.

    Okay, here are my results..

    1. I already have the file, "winhttp.dll" file; I found it after I conducted a search on it
    2. Very few files were able to be re-registered that you had mentioned as your second method, although there were a couple (literally, if any) that did register HOWEVER, they appeared not to be in the system32 folder. (example: cdm.dll was able to be re-registered, but it wasn't in the system 32 folder when I had searched for it; could this be a "hidden file" and that might be why I can't find it?
    3. "Dial-a-fix" is not vista compatible. I have Vista Home Premium.

    My other idea I had, I was wondering if I copy each of these DLL's from another computer that uses vista to my computer; would that work?
