Jenna I checked the box to activate the hover under make mouse settigns easier and the reverse seems to be true.
No more links automatically opening.
In Windows 7, whenever I hover over things, the mouse automatically selects items or follows links without me clicking.

I installed Windows 7 Premium Home Edition on my laptop. I am having problems with the mouse constantly selecting items that I don't want it to select. I would like to get it back to the way it has worked in every other version of WIndows where I have to click on something to select.
Do you know how annoying it is to be typing something on a webpage & suddenly your redirected to another page because your mouse hovered over a link???? Or in WIndows Explorer when I'm looking at pictures & the mouse hovers over a folder & moves it to another folder all WITHOUT me clicking & selecting it!!

Found the solution. I guess this was introduced in Vista, so people moving over to Win 7 from XP didn't know about it. To FIX, go to:
Mouse Properties > Device Settings (Tab) > Settings (button) > Tapping (menu item) > then uncheck "Enable Tapping"
Done. Fixed. Annoyance gone.

my husband found the drivers from vista(which are utterly amazing) i had to go to the laptop manufacturer web site for the drivers that are specifically for the laptop mine is an acer . so check your computer site for drivers

2013-01-18T18:44:07+00:00 Can people please read the question. Apparently 2 years on no one noticed that anything to do with ease of use and activate windows IS IRRELEVANT. For example the fancy formatted long proposed answer and the reply from Michael_R which says that the proposal is a mistake.
The question was NOT automatically activating a window when you mouse over it, the question is:
"with the mouse constantly selecting items that I don't want it to select.". This refers to "items" like files in a Windows File Explorer. The original question ended with "Or in Windows Explorer when I'm looking at pictures & the mouse hovers over a folder & moves it to another folder all WITHOUT me clicking & selecting it!" Notice there is NO MENTION of a WINDOW the OP is talking about mousing overing over cause selection which results in unwanted behavior.
One answer given might be an answer:

But where in the world is the menu selection "Mouse Properties".
But is un-checking "enable Tapping" really going to take care of mousing over causes auto SELECTION of displayed items?
