In Windows 7, whenever I hover over things, the mouse automatically selects items or follows links without me clicking.

I installed Windows 7 Premium Home Edition on my laptop. I am having problems with the mouse constantly selecting items that I don't want it to select. I would like to get it back to the way it has worked in every other version of WIndows where I have to click on something to select.

Do you know how annoying it is to be typing something on a webpage & suddenly your redirected to another page because your mouse hovered over a link???? Or in WIndows Explorer when I'm looking at pictures & the mouse hovers over a folder & moves it to another folder all WITHOUT me clicking & selecting it!!

Jenna I checked the box to activate the hover under make mouse settigns easier and the reverse seems to be true.

No more links automatically opening.

Found the solution. I guess this was introduced in Vista, so people moving over to Win 7 from XP didn't know about it. To FIX, go to:

Mouse Properties > Device Settings (Tab) > Settings (button) > Tapping (menu item) > then uncheck "Enable Tapping"

Done. Fixed. Annoyance gone.

my husband found the drivers from vista(which are utterly amazing) i had to go to the laptop manufacturer web site for the drivers that are specifically for the laptop mine is an acer . so check your computer site for drivers

Same problem the solution I found was to go under "folder Options" inside of the Control panel and under the General tab, I changed my clicking preference from "single (point to select)" to "Double click (point to select)"

Minus my creative use of US Navy-certified curse words, your letter sounds just like what I intended to write. This is the stupidest feature in a long list of stupid features that should have been left out of Windows 7. But even though it's a piece of ****, Windows 7 is miles ahead of Vista, though it will never be as good as Windows XP. I assume it was the retirement of Bill Gates that caused this precipitous fall in quality. But here is how you fix this moronic setting (though, really, you CAN'T fix it--you can only make it happen less often. You CANNOT turn off Mouse Hover. It has no "OFF" setting. Morons designed it and so--surprise--it's moronic.
1. Go into RegEdit. (you may want to EXPORT (file menu) the registry for safekeeping before you change it)
2. Open up Control Panel and then
3. Open up Mouse.
You will find three registry settings for Mouse Hover: MouseHoverHeight, MouseHoverTime, and MouseHoverWidth.
1. Double click on the icon next to MouseHoverTime and in the dialog that pops up
2. Change this value to 4000.
It's the maximum length of time you can prevent Windows from screwing up your life. I suspect that it's four seconds. But it might be 4000 seconds--who knows? I'm sure the Windows engineer who came up with this scheme is in a straitjacket somewhere and can't be reached for further information. Just remember: Windows 7 sucks. It doesn't suck as bad as Vista, but it is a really sucky product all the same. Maybe that french woman at the sidewalk bistro who claimed Windows 7 was her idea was telling the truth (famous Windows 7 commercial). There is something about Windows 7 that bespeaks thick armpit hair and body odor, a severe wine-drinking problem, and hours spent sipping espresso on month-long vacations--in short, it is French.
1. Close RegEdit. Reboot. Still have a problem? Leave a flaming bag of dog doo on the front porch in Redmond. Windows 7 sucks.
